Harris would welcome international call-up for prolific Millwall star: https://www.newsatden.co.uk/64469-harris-would-welcome-international-call-up-for-prolific-millwall-star.htmlIts great to hear a manager say that he wants to have his players playing international football .

So he's not playing up front? I always assumed he was a striker but was aware he had drifted to the right for Millwall. We aren't exactly stuck for wingers (like we are strikers). He has a lot to do at Championship level to get into the squad as a winger.

He is a striker, but they're playing him out wide at the moment.

Whether he's a winger or a striker (not sure what his birth-cert says) I would say that he'd be picked for a senior squad as a player in the position in which he has merited the call-up.

"‘It was always Ireland for me’ – London-born footballer Aiden O’Brien on delighting his mammy by declaring for the Republic: http://irishpost.co.uk/always-ireland-london-born-footballer-aiden-obrien-delighting-mammy-declaring-republic/

The young winger insisted that he never had any doubts about his allegiance to Ireland, having grown up supporting the Boys in Green.

It was always Ireland for me,” he said. “There were no two ways about it. I was 16, 17. I had the option of going for Ireland and my dad got the call. There was no decision to be made. I’ve come through the ranks — now I’m here, I want to stay here.”

“My whole family for a tournament would always support the Irish rather than the English. My family from my mum’s side is born and bred Irish.”

Surely has at least one paternal grandparent also with a name like his.

That's what I'd have thought as he talks about his "whole" family supporting Ireland over England. He also mentioned about his dad getting the call (from the FAI) when O'Brien was younger and there being "no decision to be made", so I'd get the impression from that that his dad was fully supportive of him going with Ireland.

I suppose it's also possible that his mum is O'Brien and that he hasn't taken his dad's surname?

FA cup form is carrying into the league. O'Brien has Millwall 1-0 at home to Preston.

Daryl Horgan was back on the bench for Preston. Cunningham and Browne both started. O'Connor and Boyle are on the bench with Horgan.

Scored tonight v Plymouth, as did Williams. O'Brien has been involved a fair bit so far in the league too this season so far.

A bit of a surprise? Former Millwall player O'Brien has moved from Sunderland to Portsmouth on a free transfer (BBC Football). Of course it's colder in the north-east, where he scored 12 goals in 66 appearances.

I was surprised Sunderland didn’t use him much.
He was decent in Championship for Milwall and didn’t get much of a run of games with Sunderland.
Often sprung from bench it seems

O'Brien seems to have been desperate to get away from Sunderland and Lee Johnson -- in January he took a 3 month contract at Portsmouth. After O'Brien scored 4 goals in 10 appearances for Pompey, manager Danny Cowley wants to extend that contract. (The News, Portsmouth, 7 April).

O'Brien signed for Shrewsbury last summer, but has struggled with a groin injury and has yet to start a game for them; he has made five appearances from the bench, but is currently not fit enough for Steve Cotterill to put him in the squad. (Shropshire Star, 26 December, Sunderland Echo, 7 January)

Has dropped further down the football pyramid with a loan switch to Sutton of League Two.
