Closely contested derby match and much more effective performance from the Youths in Ferrycarrig tonight even though they came away with nothing. Youths started with Graham, Craig C., Gary, Lee, Conor, Drukie, Jonny, Eric, Craig W., and with Rocks and Danny up front. Wexford started the better and played in a much more direct fashion than in the previous matches against Cabinteely and UCC and it paid early dividends. After six minutes, Wexford won a corner which a Blues defender headed back towards his own goal. This dropped to Danny who just managed to reach it and steer home for 1-0 to the Youths. On 15 minutes, the Blues got their first shot away but Graham got down to save it comfortably. With 24 minutes gone, Gary Delaney received a yellow when he pulled back a Blues attacker going through. As there wasn't much cover behind him, it could have been a red. The resulting free-kick from outside the box was hit about a foot over the bar. Yellow cards followed regularly from then on for both sides but fortunately nobody picked up a second yellow. Wexford really lost the game due to a failure to deal with set-pieces and the equaliser for Waterford came on 28 minutes when a long free-kick came into the penalty area and as Graham came to punch, he was beaten to it by Dineen who headed into the empty net for 1-1. Gary Delaney then had a header just wide for the Youths while Waterford then nearly scored their second when Wexford gave the ball away badly in their own half and a low cross into the Youth's penalty area was missed by both the final Youths defender and the incoming Blues forward. 1-1 at half-time after an even first period.

Second half was as even as the first and the deciding goal again resulted from Wexford's failure to deal with a set-piece. Danny Furlong nearly scored in the first minute when he was put through by Eric Molloy but he dragged his shot a yard wide. With an hour gone, Jonny Bonner got free down the left, but from a bad angle shot straight at the Blues keeper. With 20 minutes to go, Waterford won a free-kick right on the touchline about 40 yards out. This was smacked right to the far-post and Waterford's O'Donnell was able to head home too easily for 2-1 to Waterford. Yellow cards continued to be flashed and. as the game entered the last few minutes, Wexford applied a good deal of pressure but were unable to get the equaliser to leave the final score at 2-1 to Waterford. For Wexford, Rocks, Gary Delaney and Conor Whittle were probably the best while Peter Higgins came on as a sub in the last few minutes and may have done enough to get a start next time. For Waterford, Jack Doherty was probably man of the match while their defence coped well with Rocks's threat in the air to prevent Wexford from creating too much by that route. 2-1 to Waterford at full time with about 700 at the match.

Nigel
They rarely announce the official attendance at the match. It's usually included in the match report in the local paper on the following Tuesday - so I should have it for you then.
