With the help of Football Manager 2005 I compiled a list of Irish players playing in England. ATM, I've only got through the premiership and championship. I have links to profiles of the lesser known players that actually had an online profiles. I've also got links to match reports of the reserves, youths and 1st team reports for the lower leagues as it would be more difficult to keep track of these matches. If you know of any players not in the list post there details and i'll add them. If a mod feels this warrants a sticky please do.

BTW, I didn't include those who have retired from International football.

That's a detailed list you've compiled, eirebhoy. Fair play to you. Some interesting names across both divisions. Hopefully some of the kids mentioned will rise to the very top. :)

EB,
There's normally a list in one of the Irish papers,on a Sun./Mon.(Tribune?/Irish Times?)of all the Irish players in the Eng.& Scots.Lges.......which might help
Aye, cheers. I found Derek Geary in there, didn't previously have him listed. I find the Irish Times very good for the stats such as assists and shots. Kavanagh is the second highest player in the shots list with 41.

Leon Best scored 2 for Southampton reserves last night, they beat Coventry 4-1. Also, Yeates set up the only goal as Spurs won 1-0.

Fair dues to ya EB,a lot of work put in there.

I wouldn't mind seeing a list of former EL players playing in England or Scotland now, most would be in the lower leagues of England i'd say.

Cork City have at least two exiles as far as I know Damian Delaney and Brian Barry Murphy at Hull and Bury.

Thanks eb, great info.

Couple of questions.

1. Is Leon Best committed to Ireland. There was some talk of him changing his allegiance to England.?

2. Anyone know a site where I can get a weekly update of Irish players in Prem & Champ Lge (old 1st Div) who are injured. There was a site years ago that did that but it disappeared.

Cheers.

Fair play to you EB, that's just what the Irish soccer nerd needs. I actually can't think of anywhere else where you can find all this information in the one place. I saw Leon Best mentioned there. Any update on this troubled youngster? If this post is out of place, feel free to move it. Not sure if this sticky is a forum for discussion or just information.

Cheers.

Fair play to you EB. Gary Kelly seems to have slipped through the net but we'll forgive you that one indescretion - just don't let it happen again :D

Speaking of exiled EL players ex-Kilkenny City star Michael Reddy is currently plying his trade with the mighty Grimsby Town. Thought when he scored a goal in the Premiership that he was destined for bigger things.

Did anyone see Duffer tonight? I watched Celtic so didn't get to see him. He came on at H/T for Robben and is currently rated as the highest outfield player by the fans on Sky:

Nice one eirebhoy, I posted this in the yongsters thread, but I think it's better suited here

Stephen Ireland played for the Man City reserves on monday night against Bolton's reserves, including Joey O'Brien in midfield.

Karl Bermingham came with about 20 minutes to go, but doesn't get a mention in the review

mcfc.co.uk describes him as the star of the game, he set up the second goal, read the review here (http://www.mcfc.co.uk/article.asp?article=239566&Title=Points+shared+for+reserves)

Partridge starts for Liverpool reserves tonight, could be his chance to impress to at least get a place on the bench tonight. Luis Garcia, Baros, Cisse and Traore are all out injured. Josemi is also injured and suspended for the Arsenal game which means Finnan will be playing at RB rather than right side of midfield. With Traore injured Risse will also be forced to play at the back which means less choices for midfield and Kewell is most likely going to start up front. Nunez will also start for the reserves tonight but Rafa said he won't play for the first team for another week or 2. It will be a sin if Richie can't even make the bench for the Arsenal game.

I'm downloading the second half of the Chelsea game to see how Duffer did (10% downloaded in 10 minutes, pretty quick). It looks like he's getting more freedom since the Croatia game and is returning to the player we all know him to be.

tetsujin - I don't think it will be long before O'Brien breaks into the Bolton first team. Captain of the reserves at such a young age. Any idea why McCarthy didn't play?

I think it was a blessing bringing Robben to chelsea, its takes the pressurre off duff and the oppositon have to put two men on robben like they'd normally do to duff, so he getting back to his pele way.. Id still rather him than robben anyway.. Richie should be on the bench on sunday alright, I reckon potter will be too.

O'Brien got a run out for the first team in the league cup already, think he was a very late sub.

No idea why Paddy McCarthy didn't play, he's a regular for the reserves and I haven't heard anything about injuries. I know Willo Flood didn't play because of his involvement with the first team (unused sub at the weekend), so if I had to guess it's in case there is an injury or suspension at senior level and he's needed there. He's not played for the last 2 games, scored on his last runout against Villa's second string. There's a lot of talk on the official site about Paddy having to be patient and his chance will come - see here (http://www.mcfc.co.uk/article.asp?article=239776&Title=Patience+Paddy) . He signed a contract extension to 2007, Keegan got rightly stung with Elliott so he's tieing the younger stars to longer term contracts. AFAIK he's left footed (not 100% on that) otherwise I would have thought he could fill in at right full, injuries + suspensions meant Onuoha started there for the first time last week, and Danny Mills is back for Villa at the weekend. I'd say it'd take an injury or suspension to Distin or Dunne to get him in the first team picture.

I was looking up Damien Delaney stats for Hull City after checking out your man Mickey Keane and saw that Leicester paid £50,000 to Cork City for him.I don't remember that much money being mentioned at the time.It would have been a lot for a young player who was only in the City first team for a couple of months before he was signed up.

Michael Keane, used to be at Preston and was highly rated, broke his leg last year and was out for most of the season, was on loan at Grimsby before Peter Taylor picked him up, there's a few Irish players in the first team at Hull, Damien Delaney (left full from Cork), Ben Burgess (who was knocking them in for fun last season) and Jonathon Walters (striker who used to be at Bolton, big Sam offloaded him last season, scored twice on his debut for the U-21s)

Delaney was Peter Taylor's first signing after taking over, he had him at Leicester so he knows all about him

Just watched the second half of the Chelsea match and Duff was the best player by far. I think Spurs was his first game back, he came off the bench and was his usual self running by players. Since then he was averaging less than 2 fouls on him a game and was only doing everything simple. I didn't know whether it was his choice or Mourinho's but now I'm certain it was Mourinho telling him to play conservative. The last 2 games he has been his old self which is good.

Eirebhoy,

Good list, I am one of these 'saddos' who keeps an eye out for Irish players and this list will help.

One query to all - did Gavin Mahon of Watford not play or get picked for Ireland at U21 level. I think it was when he was playing at Brentford. There is nothing on the Watford website to confirm this.

Also I believe that Scott Fitzgerald ( stricker) has been looked at by the Irish camp last season when he was scoring goals. Could just be paper talk.

On Mahon, not as far as I know. He does qualify for Ireland though. As does Scott Fitzgerald, about whom the Watford Observer ran an article last season in which he talked of his mother being from Galway.

An update on the Irish at Arsenal. Here's what the reserve coach had to say after the Spurs match:

on Patrick Cregg's progress...
“He scored a well worked goal tonight. We had some good patches of play and we got inbetween their midfield and the back players. From there I wanted them to make runs to get in behind them and Patrick scored a goal doing just that. I think Patrick has done ever so well. He's only a teenager but he's played at Manchester United and made some great strides this season. That's all you can do for the manager.”

on Anthony Stokes' individual goal...
“Stokes scored a very good individual goal. He did ever so well, showed great persistence and skill and got his reward. He worked really hard again and finishes well."

on Stokes adapting to a new position...
“Stokes is adding to his game all the time and what we're trying to produce is an intelligent footballer. The manager talks a lot about football intelligence and the players are taking up the challenge. It's important they get a football education. You don't know where they will end up as players so when they go out there and do a job for the team they can function in different positions."

Stephen O'Donnell scored Arsenal's only goal against Palace last night too. Sean Kelly came off the bench.

Marcos Painter was sent off for Birmingham reserves against Fulham. Stephen Foley and James O'Connor started for Villa and O'Connor hit the bar.

Darren Potter ran the show for Liverpool reserves (Partridge was in the original lineup but was replaced by Warnock yesterday afternoon which most likely was down to injury). On-loan Colin Doyle started for Nottm Forest:

Forest took the lead in the match on the hour mark but Liverpool were level within three minutes through a cool penalty from Foy after Potter was brought down.

Potter was a class act throughout the match and his passing and probing was a big feature of Liverpool's performance. He combined well in the centre of midfield with captain John Welsh who played a deeper role to allow Potter to dictate the play.

Liverpool made a bright start in the match and Mark Smyth was denied a goal by a fine save from Colin Doyle after brilliant approach play from Darren Potter.

Another superb pass from Potter almost produced a goal for Liverpool but Robbie Foy in a great position was unlucky to see Doyle deny him with a superb diving save.

Within three minutes Liverpool were level courtesy of a Robbie Foy penalty. Superb skill from Potter saw him brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. As cool as you like Foy sent Doylethe wrong way from 12 yards.

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: Darren Potter. Classy display in midfield and his passing was superb.

Spurs don't seem to have their reserve report up yet so this is taken from the West Ham site:

Unfortunately for Kevin Keen’s men it was a sign of things to come. Six minutes later Mark Yeates cut in from the left and curled a fabulous effort past Burch to put Spurs ahead.

Yeates tested Burch again five minutes later, his free-kick deflecting off the West Ham wall before finding its way through to the Hammers goalkeeper. With the home side struggling to find their rhythm, Spurs went further ahead just before half-time. Yeates’ through-ball released Jamie Slabber who scored with a cool finish to send Kevin Keen’s men in 2-0 down at the break.

Yeates made the first team bench on Saturday and Jol was at the West Ham match so it shouldn't be long before he gets his chance.

Willo Flood and Paddy McCarthy played for the Man City reserves in a defeat to Bolton last night, Willo Flood appeared to be running the show according to the match report, and scored in the penalty shoot out, McCarthy missed his penalty. Pity, he has a decent rep for free kicks.

City lost out to Bolton Wanderers in the Manchester Senior Cup after the game went to a penalty shoot out.
The match at SportCity ended 1-1 and so went to a penalty shoot out which was won by the visitors.

City opened brightly with Willo Flood making a mazy run towards the Bolton box, his final shot was blocked and Bradley Wright-Phillips sent the rebound wide of the post.

However it was Bolton who took the lead with possibly their only real foray of the game on the City goal mouth. Dale Whitehead coasted in at the far post to head home Reda Kribib’s left wing cross.

Wright-Phillips had a great chance to level the scores when Bolton’s Danny Livesey slipped.

The City striker and the side’s top scorer ran onto Marc Lairds pass but Andy Oakes in the Wanderers goal produced a fine save diving to his left to keep out Wright-Phillips shot.

Both Christian Negouai and Micah Richards, in his first full appearance for the reserves, both went close as City pressed forward for an equaliser.

As the side stepped up the pressure Andy Oakes kept out a rasping shot from Flood.

City were handed a lifeline on fifty six minutes when the referee spotted a pushing incident in the box.

Bradley Wright-Phillips stepped up to score from the penalty spot sending the keeper the wrong way.

The hitman should have then given his side the lead but could only look on with despair as he flashed a header from a Flood cross wide of the post.

In the final piece of action in the game Oakes kept out a curling free kick from Flood to send the game to penalties.

Teams:
Manchester City: Weaver, Lee-Matthews, Collins, Negouai, McCarthy, Onuoha, Flood, Richards, Bermingham, B Wright-Phillips, Laird
Subs: Schmeichel (GK), Warrender, N D’Laryea, Bennett, Miller

Bolton Wanderers: Oakes, Powell, Hill (Fojut 78), Livesey, Comyn-Platt, Campo, Whitehead, Fadiga, Buval, Vaz Te (Luisi 57), Kribib (Gibb 62)
Subs: Howarth (GK), Knowles

Penalties:
Manchester City:Flood, Collins, Onuoha all scored……..McCarthy, B Wright-Phillips missed

He made his senior debut in November against FC Kaiserslautern but suffered a bad knee injury just before-half time.

German football is on its winter break until mid January, so he may be back by then.
