Shamrock Rovers and St Pats kick off the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division live on RTÉ2 plus the return of Soccer Republic

The 2015 SSE Airtricity League kicks off this Friday 6 March and over the course of the season RTÉ2 will show 17 live games including the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup semi-finals and final. Coverage begins on Friday with live Premier Division action from Tallaght Stadium as Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic face-off in a game between two of the favourites for league glory this year.

Darragh Maloney will be joined by Richie Sadlier and former Hoops manager and Saints assistant boss Trevor Croly while Ger Canning will be joined in commentary by Kenny Cunningham. The game kicks off at 7.45pm with High Definition coverage beginning at 7.40pm.

Monday 9 March sees the return of Soccer Republic (11.05pm, RTÉ2) with Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny joining presenter Peter Collins in studio alongside regular panellists Alan Cawley and Stuart Byrne. The programme will feature all the goals from the weekend’s Premier Division games plus an interview with Robbie Keane and, in a new regular feature, a look at how Irish players and coaches are getting on abroad. The first show in the series will also feature a report on new boys Cabinteely FC’s first game as an SSE Airtricity League club.

It didn't take long for them to start messing with the kick off times again.

Technically they moved the first game from it's original KO time too.

I heard this last night alright. Ridiculous moving a game to a bank holiday afternoon. I think it will badly affect our crowd for it.

The earlier kick off is a easier sell than the later one , watch the game then watch the other game on to with a pint go home earlyish.

Monday afternoon instead of Friday night will knock 500-1000 off the crowd. On the plus side it's another opportunity to indoctrinate my offspring at a young and impressionable age.

Never understood why bank holiday games attract less people. Happens with Rovers too anyway. I know they're out of the routine but they're more convenient than running home from work and back out, etc. Plus parents can bring kids when Friday night might not suit as well.

Bank Holidays, with decent weather, are seen as perfect days/weekend for family trips (either day trips or weekends away). For any floating fan, he/she might prefer* to spend a day with the whole family. We can try and fool ourselves that loads of families go to LOI games but it's still hugely male skewing

*probably not "prefering" but he/she may not have much say

Bohs are now a player down in Dean Kelly due to the change of date for tv, he changed his flight from a Friday to a Saturday to play against cork, he has a family wedding to attend. Now due to this change we are being hindered even more just to suit setanta.

Clubs do have some autonomy to say no. I know the opening game of last season at Turner's Cross, Cork turned it down because RTE wouldn't give guarantees on dates/times and Cork got fed up so Rovers ended up moving the first game to the Sunday. I'd imagine with something like this the FAI put their foot down though.

SSE AIRTRICITY LEAGUE LIVE ON RTÉ2 AS CORK CITY HOST CHAMPIONS DUNDALK

Live SSE Airtricity League Premier Division action returns to RTÉ2 tomorrow night (Friday 24 April) for High Definition coverage from Turner’s Cross of the biggest game of the season so far as 2014 runners-up Cork City take on champions Dundalk. Last season’s title decider in Oriel Park between the two sides drew a full house to the Louth venue and a large television audience on RTÉ2 and with both sides again setting the pace this season fans will be hoping for similarly entertaining fare this time around.

Presenter Peter Collins will be joined by Stuart Byrne for analysis. Commentary comes from George Hamilton and Damien Richardson while Tony O’Donoghue will have all the reaction from both camps.

That might deter some Dundalk fans from travelling now. Don't see why they just don't release a list of games at the start of the season that they'll show rather than pick and choose as they please and screw up already arranged kick-off times.

Reeks of a lack of professionalism from RTÉ.

The game was announced as being on TV about 2/3 weeks ago. To be fair to RTE, they can't pick too far ahead of time as they'll need to see form/league position etc. They might have marked this one down but things change

Wasn't aware of that, I had assumed it was only announced today. In that case, it amounts to poor advertising from RTÉ.

I wish they'd stop the Tony O'Donoghue touchline pieces. They are an annoyance and add nothing to the coverage. One of these days he's going to catch a manager at the wrong time and be told to F*** Off.

I know he was slowly being integrated back in as 4th official etc. is this his first premier match as referee since that debacle in Drogheda?

It is real bad news for referring standards in this league - he takes things to a new low of incompetancy

This game will now kick-off at 8.05pm to facilitate the live television coverage.

Both matches will be shown on Setanta Ireland and the programmes will start at 7.30pm each evening.

Upcoming Live TV Games

Friday, June 26: St. Patrick’s Athletic v Longford, Richmond Park, 8pm. (Live on Setanta Ireland)
Friday, July 3: Drogheda United v Dundalk, United Park, 8.05pm. (Live on Setanta Ireland)

Yep. Think RTE's contract is for 15 (maybe 17) from memory. 2 cup semis and the final will be included there.

Last season for league games, RTE showed 11 and Setanta 8.

Much prefer setantas coverage they don't feck about KO times (yes I know games were moved but they were a BH and it was great to see a double header) and they do a real professional job of the coverage

nigel-harps1954
05/06/2015, 1:42 PM
Setanta do feck about with kick-off times, they just don't make them 7:05 with 5 minutes coverage. They actually do a fairly decent analysis of games though and I much prefer their coverage too. It's just a pity it's not on terrestrial television.

Dodge
05/06/2015, 2:12 PM
The actual game itself is usually covered much better by RTE as they have more cameras and people on the ground than Setanta. Setanta have done a live game with only 2 cameras and both on the half way line in the gantry before.

Punditry and analysis is much better on Setanta as they give it a bit of time. I find Damian Lynch to be excellent too

It is a pity they are not terrestrial. Might actually get value for having a tv licence if it was possible for them to put Setanta Ireland on Saorview! Sky make so much money on advertising, subscriptions boost their profits. It's a shame Setanta Ireland can't be brought on to Saorview, with Setanta 1 remaining behind their pay wall. One could act as more advertising for the other. Keep the across the water action on Setanta 1. Not likely to happen I know.
