"do they have the same barber?"

Or: "I'd be just as tall as him if I had a fro-hawk too."

Someone on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/38wj7t/irish_president_says_something_to_rooney_after/crydjlm?context=3) reckons:

Looks like
Irish President "I'm assuming this is mr danny welbeck?"
Rooney "sorry sir this is Mr sterling"

It actually paves the way for an interesting comment or two on what is known as the "own-race bias (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-race_effect)".

In light of this, another poster then amusingly suggests:

Or Irish President "I'm assuming this is mr welbeck?" Rooney "sorry sir this is Mr Sturridge"

I wonder what President Higgins said to Rooney (http://www.balls.ie/football/michael-d-higgins-raheem-sterling/295917) after shaking hands with Sterling. Rooney and Lallana found it amusing, but Sterling didn't look impressed at all.
Boooo!!

Just came across this and put it in the YouTube thread in the 'Fans' Forum' too:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBeDSFGzShg

It's complete footage of RTÉ's live coverage of the 1995 game.

Seem a lot more competitive than the bored the bored draw on Sunday.

Ha, you're not seriously trying to say this is the first time you've noticed this? Half a decade after it was built?

I don't know, but it was the only remotely "interesting" comment I could think of making about the game.

Maybe I was thinking "s*i*" subconsciously, which lead to me talking the same.

As Charlie sorta said, there's a 1 in 6m chance that you'll meet an irish person who wasn't aware of the toilet seat stadium / bed pan comparison.

A quarter of a century ago today (http://www.balls.ie/football/kevin-sheedy-marks-25th-anniversary-of-italia-90-with-perfectly-nostalgic-tweet/296472):

Kevin Sheedy tweeted (https://twitter.com/kevin11sheedy/status/608949666517004288):

OMG 25yrs today I scored Ireland's first ever goal in the World Cup v England can still see Shilton waving as it went passed him @Everton

Did we defend as badly as for Lineker's goal ever again under Charlton?

What a complete shambles.

Wouldn't have pegged Sheedy as an 'omg' kind of guy.

When Sheedy scored that goal, I was an OMG guy.

Not too unlike our own Easter Rising commemorations, Sky Sports haven't wasted any time in getting the ball rolling on the 50 year anniversary of England winning the World Cup. I suppose it would have been naive to think it was going to be condensed to the actual day during the summer that the anniversary takes place. :)

It sounds kind of interesting though I must admit-
Monday Night Football 1966 special on Sky Sports (http://www.skysports.com/football/news/21564/10108721/monday-night-football-1966-special-on-sky-sports)

This technology must indicate that the ball was over the line, I doubt they'd mention it otherwise.

Fairly sure it was proven a few years back that the ball didn't cross the line. Hurst has acknowledged as much, and it seems fairly clear from (colour) footage.

Not that it matters of course - it was a goal.

Though not sure what the relevance is to last year's turgid friendly. :)

You know... England, football, that whole thing :p

I guess I pulled a bit of a Crosby! The deserted World Cup forum would have been the obvious choice in terms of relevance but the majority on here probably wouldn't notice it for a couple of days*, and I'd hate for ye guys to miss the show. :D

No, there'll be no replay at this stage!... but I think it's human nature to derive a greater satisfaction when instead of being handed something, you've earned and deserved it. If it was Ireland I'd definitely prefer the ball to have crossed the line. The Lampard 'goal' in 2010 has probably diminished any lingering sense of guilt though from an English point of view. The fact that it was against the Germans probably means that guilt was never there in the first place!

*If ye're anything like me.

If scales of justice don't apply, then denial is the time honoured strategy to avoid any lurking dilemma of guilt.
Incidentally the Azeri linesmanperson never claimed the ball went over the goal line after the rebound, he claimed the ball bulged the upper net before the rebound downwards.
1960's technology would have discredited that notion and possibly relegate decades of controversy to the anoraks.

Sky have proved it was a goal, "not even close" indeed. :D

"Thank you, Mr. Bahmarov", as the feature in Orbis' World Cup '90 put it.

For an 8 year old becoming obsessed with football, it was perfection. Almost everything you needed to know about international football with the exotic names of clubs like Zamalek, Penarol, Independiente slaking your thirst to learn about the club game..

Also, action shots for most player stickers - the Panini plain head-shots got boring after a while and I don't know why they don't change.

Great compilation that. Except that it started so early, Denmark snuck in by mistake! Just as well for us they got knocked out in qualifying...
