Five Irish players and another couple eligible, so why not?

Alan McCormack off the mark for Brentford this afternoon. They are on course for a fourth league win that will have them hovering around the playoff positions.

Brentford used to be famous for it's Nylons.

Brentford was made famous by the the lunatic alien in the advert, he's DJ Alan Freeman and he actually had Brentford Nylons on his bed, paid for with his own money, so he claimed.

Who has been looking up single Muslim? Do we have a jidhadist in our ranks.

I know we never hear from our meeja friend anymore but I wouldn't have suspected him.

Funny he was always going on about the independent and INM having an agenda yet he seemed to be on a one man crusade against them. Ironic really.

Huh?

Brentford players probably too low profile/not good enough?

I don't follow.

It's there in black & white!

Saw their game yesterday, they have a no. of young quick lads who caught the eye, but be surprised if any of them are eligible...

TheOneWhoKnocks

The 5 Irish are Judge, McCormack, Douglas, O'Connor and Bonham and the eligibles are O'Shaughnessy and Hogan.

Only Judge belongs anywhere near the senior set up and I wasn't touting anyone for a senior call up.

They have just enough Irish players - while perhaps not high profile enough to warrant constantly updating their own thread - to warrant a grouped thread instead.

Brentford could be a nice little club within the next 5 years. They've committed to playing a nice brand of football, and they're starting to work hard on the underage setup. They'll be moving to a brand new state of the art stadium in two years time I think, in a nice catchment area of West London. I think if they keep up their current trajectory there is no reason why they cannot become established in the Premier League by the end of this decade

They were very unlucky not to get promoted automatically to the Championship the season before last when they'd an amazing last minute encounter with Doncaster. I don't think it's the worst club a young Irish player could end up at.

They currently play at Griffin Park. They'll have to hand back their Irish credentials if they leave such an obviously Irish stadium.

The sad bit is he has probably posted it in this thread as intended.
Relevance of reply and sense of content in the reply has probably been affected by too much meths over the years.
Can't somebody help him?

Third goal of the season for Jonathan Douglas. Brentford on course for a fifth league win and the playoffs in touching distance.

An Irish midfield goalscorer! Stan was on to something...

I didn't even realise he was at Brentford until I heard his name watching the Football League show.

I'm still traumatised by his miss one on one with Cech a few days after the Cyprus calamity.

Last season's supporters’ player of the year, Alan McCormack, has provisionally been ruled out until February.

No Irish namechecked but interesting article nonetheless on how Brentford is being run. The tie up with Uxbridge High school bit particularly interested me.

With RTE reporting that new faces are likely to be in the next squad (Hoban and Arter suggested) and Irish Times making a case for Eoin Doyle and Keith Andrews, I have to say that I was realy impressed by Jonathan Douglas last weekend. Full of energy, drive and "get forward" ambition. He looks in great shape, but hadn't got the facial growth to carry the hipster look as effectively as others. Ok, I only saw twenty minutes on the telly and M'boro seemed intent on soaking up pressure, which makes attacking players look better, but still...

TheOneWhoKnocks

Could have sworn Jonathan Douglas had his own thread.

Enjoying the best season of his career. He has 7 goals in 35 games. His previous best was 5 goals in 47 games in the 2005/06 season.

He hasn't played in the Championship since the 2006/07 season which makes his form this season all the more unexpected.

If Brentford make the Playoffs he won't be a good luck charm though, after all the Playoff heartache he went though trying to get back to the Championship over the years.

Didnt he get to the Championship playoffs with Leeds years ago playing beside Liam Miller??

There was an article about Douglas in The Sunday Times today. He thinks Staunton should have been given another campaign.

Brentford drew 2-2 with Bolton today. Both goals were assisted by Alan Judge with Jonathan Douglas scoring one of them.

Paddy McCarthy started and finished for Bolton.

O'Neill has seemingly dismissed any chance of calling up Alan Judge, which I find bizarre.

When was this? What did he say? I didn't see those quotes.

Disappointed if he's not deemed an option. He's ahead of Wes Hoolahan with assists which is no mean feat.

Only mention I can find is here, where it's said O'Neill "sounded cool" when asked about him: http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/international/shay-given-still-has-right-stuff-martin-o-neill-1.2178832

Was just about to post that article too. Strange from O'Neill. If Brentford somehow manage to get promoted or if someone in the PL took a punt on Judge then I wonder how cool he'd remain.

Does Judge have any English lineage? We might lose him to na Sasanaigh like Graham Burke :(

TheOneWhoKnocks
20/04/2015, 11:28 PM
It must be because he's Irish born.

You can laugh all you want but if he was an English born eligible player, I genuinely think he would pique more interest on that basis alone. I really do.

There is nothing at all between Arter & Judge.

Charlie Darwin
20/04/2015, 11:33 PM
They're not similar players, to be fair. Arter is a typical British-style box to box midfielder, from what I've seen, and we could probably do with it. Whereas Judge is a bit more subtle but probably not at a good enough level to usurp the likes of Hoolahan, McGeady, et al.

DeLorean
21/04/2015, 9:49 AM
Jesus, there wasn't even a direct quote from O'Neill regarding Judge. It was just a loose 'by the way' comment from a journalist, basically saying he got the impression that O'Neill didn't seem too fussed at this moment in time, he didn't even explain why he got that impression. Nothing for anybody to get their knickers in a twist over. Fecking drama like.

And the irony is, if he was English born and called up, we'd probably be reading... "what's the point in calling up a 26 year old, lower league journey man, when we have so many better options and he'll be way down the pecking order anyway bla bla bla"!

Jack Bonham recently made his Brentford debut and received praise from his manager for his performance.

Any relation to John Bonham of Zeppelin?

“I've been looking for the opportunity to get him in as his attitude in training has been very good. I needed to know whether Jack can compete at Championship level and he's proven today that he can.”

Sounds promising the regularly keeper was "rested" ie not injured so sound as though he could be challenging him for the #1 spot.
