JonGoodman made his debut in February 1997 away to Wales. He then played the next game against Macedonia and as was pointed out, he set up David Kelly's goal. I dont think he played against Romania in the following game but I might be wrong. David Connolly played on his own up front that night. I think its fair to say that Jon Goodman was past his best when he played for Ireland.

i'm always slightly disappointed that mickey evans got a cap. did he come on for his debut, then get taken off again, and was never seen again in a green jersey till he signed for plymouth?
Mickey Evans came on as a sub with about 10 minutes to go against Romania in October 1997. He had set the Premiership alight with a number of super-sub appearances for Southampton the previous season. He never played for Ireland again and never really made the grade at club level.

And I do not need you to point out what Eddie McG, Alan Kernaghan or Curtis Fleming did for Ireland. Obviously I know exactly what these lads have done in a green shirt (Kernaghan v Salinas, Lansdowne '93; Milligan's one cap wonder v Russia '94; Liam Daish was embarrassing against Wales when we played them out at RDS I think it was - outpaced by Mark Pembridge of all people. Curtis was unspectacular at best). So yes, it was tongue in cheek when I referred to these altogether unspectacular and average players as 'demeaning' the value of the Irish cap - that obviously is much too harsh and only meant in jest - I happen to think it is quite funny that we can give caps to such below-average players (although usually not many). I for one find it a good laugh to reflect on all these players who have fallen by the wayside (Alan Mahon, Gareth Whalley, Dominic Foley etc) and think back nostaligcally about their exploits during their brief time in an Irish jersey.
Garreth Whalley didnt play for the Ireland senior team. He played for the B team when he was riding high with Bradford. As for Alan Mahon, isnt he playing with Wigan at the moment who have been at the top end of the Championship table all season?
You might think that its funny that sometimes Ireland are forced to play sub-standard international players but that is the nature of a footballing nation like Ireland. We dont have a big pick. Sometimes, because of injuries or experimentation, we have to resort to playing weaker players. However, these lads that you have mentioned gave everything for Ireland when they were involved. If you want to poke fun at sub-standard international players, divert your attention to Norn Iron.

Did he really playin that Romania game (Keano missed a pen).
That's the game alright. Surprised me as well, but I googled him and found a Romanian website - he came on with 14 minutes to go, either for or along with Cascarino.

PM, Terry Phelan's only having a laugh, is all this really necessary? This isn't exactly the most serious of posts where we're debating the lack of depth etc.

Jon Goodman got seriously injured soon after and I don't think he kicked a ball again. Sem to remember the mazy run also.

Yeah PM, no offence, but next time you go to use the typing stick, have a good look to make sure you havent grasped the end marked WRONG again.
(this is a metaphor, I dont actually think you use a stick to type with. Just in case.)
