I shouldn't bother but Dundalk means nothing to Drogheda's newer fans. They can't even remember the last time Dundalk won a trophy and games between the two have been few and far between considering Dundalk spent most of that time in the first division.

I knew the record was bad but that's really abysmal. You can't help but place blame on the playing squad too though. Both men relied on the same core of players and they have let them down in a big way. I think it's obvious that they're just not up to it.

Completely agree. Both managers backed a core group of players who just are not good enough.

Sad to see a man lose his job but it had to happen really. It seemed a very odd appointment from the off, and the opening day win probably went a long way to papering over the cracks when they began to appear.

Have to say i laugh out loud when people describe those on the Drogheda United board of management as having 'power'. There's more power in a lawnmower! Ive seen it first hand. What being on that board of management means is getting to man the turnstiles, make sure the portaloos are emptied, organising matchday food for the team, proposing and running every fundraiser, along with the unenviable task of making decisions about everything. All in your spare time. Its not power, its a poisoned chalice! :-)

Also go back to my point above. The people with the power are the members who vote in the directors. Of note, you dont even have to be a member to nominate yourself onto the board of management. And the current board members have openly asked for more volunteers a million times. Nobody seems motivated enough. So anyone with your opinion Ciaraa should simply step forward and get involved in the pot-washing!

Every small to mid sized sports / recreation club in Ireland has those issues and challenges you constantly refer to. Maybe its time to wonder why "Nobody seems motivated enough"

Forcing out Mick Cooke was a demonstation of power.

Nope it was a forced act of protection of the club.

Ciara people aren't motivated enough because they know the effort involved and don't fancy it. Myself included.

Awful news. I always thought Robbie was an innovator.
Fingers crossed Sean McCaffrey gets the role.

The whole fault of Drogheda's predicament is the Drogheda board of management. How they let a man go who got you to 3 cup finals in a season and still be let go is baffling.
Mini mourinho churned out some stats but they don't tell the full story. Why not compare those stats to Alan Matthews tenure.

I started watching Drogheda home games in the Lourdes stadium in the early 70's, long before they were Drogheda United. I've seem them play in three cup finals, the first one in 1976.

I only stopped going to see Drogheda regularly when their newer fans developed this childish inferiority complex with Dundalk.

I like live football.

I hear you regarding live football ... Can't beat it IMO.

Heck when I'm working in the uk I go to port vale games lol

Did you live in Drogheda in the 70's as it was a long enough trip before the motorway and smaller cars to travel on a regular basis to Drogheda (or maybe it wasn't and I'm now just spoilt with the motorway 😀

Cooke & Horgan - 12 wins from 50
Matthews - 8 wins from 50

I lived in mid-Louth for most of the seventies but moved to Drogheda later on for a few years. Drogheda had some great players back then. Mick Fairclough was my favourite when I first started watching them (a mid Louth lad too). Me and my Dad would go to Oriel Park one Sunday and the Lourdes Stadium the next week. Quite a few people did. I also remember a special bus from Drogheda that used to run when Dundalk were playing big European matches. No one thought anything about it. The tribal crap didn't exist back then.

I'm a Drogs fan and don't have any animosity to Dundalk whatsoever. I'm just not motivated to do that. If I see someone wearing a Dundalk shirt, I just think 'Great, there's another League of Ireland fan.'

Ha - brilliant, will you give you that one.

Also agree on Horgan, seemed such a nice guy who cared a lot, hopelessly let down by his players this season.

The hip injury had nothing to do with running around the back garden - it was untested grass pitch at school! My yard has a Fifa 12 star rating ye know.....

(i did read a thread on boards recently where a chap -not from Dundallk i should add-who was seriously looking for advice on installing field turf in his back garden to play/train on, at the time i thought 'f*ck dont let Soccer Republic or Roddy Collins know').

Did feel sorry for Horgan after the interview and if his comments hold weight a new manager is not the main answer it is identifying the paid passengers in the squad and ousting them!

Apparently the shortlist consists of:

Liam Kelly (former St Patrick's Athletic and Shelbourne striker – who has managed Leinster Senior League club Glebe North for the last eight years)
Pete Mahon
John Gill

Not sure who else is in the mix.

It is strange how he's sort of vanished. Not fantastic, but has the know-how to get a team like Drogs on their feet again, and back in the top tier if it comes to it.

He was in charge of the FIFPro team up in Norway last year as far as I remember. Not sure if he's in junior management.

I've always liked Pete Mahon.
Despite the catastrophic performances, I think Drogs fans will retain a soft spot for Robbie Horgan. The players are to blame; quite a mystery why, after a promising start, they just stopped playing for him.

Liam Kelly was interviewed for the Town job some years back. It was either when Cousins got it or Alan Gough got it from recollection but he's been keen to get a break in LOI management by all accounts. Not sure how he's done with Glebe North

Not a huge fan of the dour Mahon but he could steady the ship for a while if given the job.

Nesta99

Gill is likley to be on money that Drogheda couldnt match so will test his ambition for a top flight managers job. If Kelly has half the impact Cauldfield has had and with knowledge of cheap and capable junior footballers to bring in for the current chancers, well could be a good shout abeit another bit of a gamble.

Word going about now that there's a consortium getting together , meeting next Monday night with a view to investing in the club. Proposals being put to the members shortly afterwards at a rapidly convened EGM.

Is it a consortium of fans or business men?

Is it tied up with the property deal relating to the new stadium?

Apparently it's headed by former LOI player John Delamere , a close pal of Mick Cooke.
Also rumours that Jim Agnew has stepped down but that's unconfirmed.

Interesting. Drogheda fans will be quite rightly cautious.

However, I thought the plan to have a new stadium on the old Coke site had the potential to give Drogheda the impetus to attract a wider fan base. Financing and whether the club will be saddled with debt will be key.

A very personable and enthusiastic character who will always give 100% to anything he tackles.

No Pro Licence - so 60 days max as interim manager according to FAI rules

Acer

It's a ridiculous appointment. I can't understand the logic of appointing a manager for a 60 day spell, especially one with such an awful record. The only possible explanation is that we're waiting for our real managerial target to finish his world cup commitments.

Darius has been getting his Pro licence for what must be 2 or 3 years now, going back to his time with Dundalk and even when he was in charge of the Drogs previous to that. How long does it take or did he just drop out of it/ put it on the long finger?
