Perl vs ASP vs ASP.NET

Im doing them all this year and only done Perl yet and its not too bad so far .

The question you should ask yourself is, 'which is more useful to me?'
Perl is good for automation if want to work in managed solutions type environments.

ASP.net is a Microsoft product and used primarily to develop Web applications. It's popular because it uses less coding.
In theory it's the easiest to learn and use.

Perl is always handy to have though.
It has so many uses that you'll find plenty chances to apply your knowledge of it in the "real world."

I'd pick a platform before I'd pick a scripting language. Although you can run Perl on Windows (ActiveState) and ASP on *nix (Chilisoft), they're more at home on their primary platforms. I wouldn't leave PHP out either, Perl is a wonderful language and it runs well both as a CGI and as webserver module, but PHP was built from the ground up as a web scripting language, whereas Perl started as a (wonderful) text processing language.

It's probably dependant on whether or not it's in his course schedule Adam but I do agree that given a choice, he should at least be familiar with it.
He could even put some of it to use in his foot.ie (http://foot.ie/) posts. ;)

Perl is great, but PHP was built to be simple. However if you're working on the Windows platform, you're probably better off with ASP languages. You can join us big boys later. :)

personally i prefer the plain method of knitting myself find the pearl just a bit too hard to manage when all i need it for is knitting a new scarf
