number of quotes from Martin O'Neill: zero
We've been down this road before, and apparently he's not eligible: http://foot.ie/threads/149952-John-Flanagan?p=1564325&viewfull=1#post1564325

Yes I remember starting a thread about him ages ago but someone said he definitely doesn't qualify for us however
it seems he does, I mean if Martin is after him he must has checked his eligibility you would think.
However it still seems to be unclear if he is eligible or not.
An article on him here about his stats, very good in the tackle.

There's nothing in the article from Martin to indicate he is actually interested in Flanagan.

no there isn't, there's a quote from Steven Gerrard, and it mentions the article from the Star, where there are no quotes from O'Neill
Incidentally, the star are a sponsor of the ybig site, where there was a recent discussion on Flanagan

I don't think he's any good either, and will be shipped off next summer, as soon as our other new recruit Ryan McLaughlin gets fully acquainted with first team football.
Flanagan won't be ahead of Coleman.

What does O'Neill say about Flanagan in the Star? It appears Tets has read said article and didn't encounter any O'Neill quotes.

Don't know but obviously they got their info from somewhere, unless they just made it up.

Ah here, tricky, I think you and I know very well that no journalist ever "makes up" a story. That would be unethical.

Flanagan is a good defensive full back as he showed against everton but he is woeful going forward worse than stephen kelly. Unless he can be a centre half he is no where near international level. Hoped Mclaughlin would go out on loan cant understand why he staying for under 21 football

Not necessarily. Information can also come in the form of misinformation propagated by speculation and gossip. As Charlie alludes to, there are plenty of ambitious journalists who are more than happy to dull their critical faculties for a moment in their striving for an audience. Media competition can do that. Tets has also noted the Star's relationship with the YBIG forum. It's easy to see how a rumour like this about a Premier League footballer with an Irish surname could grow wings.

Scored a bit of a cracker for Liverpool. Well it looked good anyway but it was quite close range.
Pretty sure he is not eligible for us but was a nice goal anyway.

Cracking close range tap in last Sunday. Has done really well since he came into the side. MOTM in the derby and has grown since then. Delighted for him and hopefully he will continue to progress. As far as i know the FAI checked this all out a few years back and he doesn’t qualify.

I know there is still speculation about this (including his Wikepedia entry) but he is definitely not eligible. Know the family very well and went round this course with them when he first got into team. His nearest connection is a couple of great-granparents. Maybe we should have a rule that two great-grandparents = one grand parent?

Well back to Martin trying to get that guy from the Chicago Fire then, instead. :D

On England's WC standby list.

Is he actually that good? I've seen him called the Red Cafu but I assumed it was people being ironic. Any time I see him he looks utterly competent but nothing more. Certainly not an attacking full back like Cafu.

That Cafu thing, as far as I know, was a bit of a social media joke where Liverpool supporters encouraged Cafu to watch Flanagan play. He's a decent defender but limited going forward, tidy but not tricky or particularly pacy I don't think. He's still very young to be fair.
