Slightly facile win, but you can only beat what's in front of you.

I agree totally with Shakermaker and rebelmusic above.

I liked the way we played on the front foot throughout and put pressure on the ball. I liked the way we worked from the back. All 3 of these are departures from the Trap ethos already.

Big apologies to Glenn Whelan. He looks a different player to the one Trap didn't allow to go forward much. Very impressive. Hoolahan and McGeady were the standouts for me. McClean set a great tempo but is still a bit one-dimensional. Good showing though. The only disappointment for me was Ward who I thought struggled a bit on the ball. Wilson was barely in the game but once or twice lacked a bit of awareness I thought.

I liked the selection and I liked the attitude. Far bigger tests to come but no complaints at all. Will we finally see the real McGeady under O'Neill? He looked like he was in his element last night.

I've only seen the rte highlights and it hard to see the pattern of the game though that helter skelter.
It's a relief to see that Kings groundwork with the squad was not in vain and the new management are moving forward from that base. It's a bit easier to do that in a non competitive game against a team who didn't look that interested, whilst everyone of our players are probably on a mission to make the impression. Good to read the positivity about the performance here.

Even the RTÉ panel were waxing lyrical! Albeit minus Dunphy.

Disagree with the lack of respect for Mr Trapattoni on here, yes it was a campaign too far, but lets not forget the earlier successes.

I agree that you can only beat what's in front of you (Thats what I say to the ladies!)
But to wax lyrical over such a performance is over the top.
A better side would of cut through us, our passing wasn't sharp enough and we gave the ball away in good positions.

Early days, so let's look forward with hope, not blind faith.

Big test against the Poles, but should we play our stronger line up it should be a good test.

In Trap we trusted, now cometh the hour cometh the MON.

Constructive criticism amounts to disrespect now? I didn't see anything in Stutts post to merit such an over-sensitive accusation. Trap's earlier successes haven't been forgotten "on here" despite your impression that some posters might be overlooking them; you'll find there's not an orthodoxy of opinion on this forum, thankfully.

I was being somewhat poetic in light of the usual negativity many have come to expect from the RTÉ panel.

But blind faith in Trap's method up until his final days in charge was all good? Do you seriously only post in insincere clichés? How about having a bit of respect for other forum users through refraining from pretending to speak for them?

I read a quote from O'Neill before the game last night indicating that there'd be plenty of experimentation with players who didn't start or see game-time last night more likely to play against Poland.

Edit: Was from here: http://www.thescore.ie/martin-oneill-ireland-latvia-pre-match-1176112-Nov2013/

We’ve got a group of players coming over here and, while the results are obviously important and it would be nice to get off to a good start and win some matches, there will be an element of experimentation as well. I’d like to give some players who don’t play tomorrow night some time in Poland.

It’s more the case of getting to know the players. I’m sure there’s not a player who will be training that wouldn’t want to play tomorrow night but I can only play so many.

Some boys who will play tomorrow will just have to sit it out in Poland. It’s a bit of a journey for the lads coming over. They’re all excited and everybody wants to be a part of it. I wouldn’t mind playing as many players as I possible can and I will mix and match.

Just watching back now. My God Nadia Forde is a brutal singer. She's not a singer! Never heard of her as anything other than a model but then I think she's just one of that Lilie's/Assets bull**** crowd where they're a model/singer/actress and anything else that will up the profile

He played in the famous 3-2 win over France. Now that was atmosphere and we didn't need a model to sing the most boring version of the national anthem you're ever likely to hear (assuming it was the anthem)!

Comparing it to other anthem massacres does not mean its not a massacre.

She absolutely destroyed it.

Anyway , no point in going into it - no doubt the debate will continue next march when nadia returns to lansdowne for futher anthem destruction against serbia

Saw the rendition last night and I recall struggling to slow to her pace at the Sweden game. I think whoever's been arranging her solo vocal performances without music must be going for the style of a sustained and spine-tingling emotive lament or something, but it really doesn't work in terms of rousing a crowd for a football match, especially when delivered at such a sluggish pace. It's an atmosphere-killer. I suppose we should be happy it was at least ever so slightly quicker than the rendition of the anthem the band played before our opening game against Italy at USA '94...

It sickens me to the pit of my guts it does. That it should happen at all is conceptually wrong IMO -but that's just a bad call, an error of judgement -whether it's Placido Domingo, John McCormack, Monserrat Caballe or whoever.

But the fact that it's a TV3 Exposé/Sunday World celebrity devoid of the slightest hint of meritocracy robbing the supporters and the team of their anthem in the name of a pimping her profile absolutely disgusts me. It's just Ireland in a feckin nutshell.

Try being at a rugby game where the same DJ (PA man) in a break in play broadcasts "Bom, bom, bom bom bom....) and the kids shout "Ireland". Cringe making stuff but perhaps it's just an age thing.

the same DJ does leinster and Ireland rugby but not the football. I think he is on today fm (bob conway?). declan king who does the football used to also do the Ireland and Leinster gigs but was moved aside. both of them are brutal.

i didnt miss a home rugby international for over 20 years but have no interest in going since they introduced all the atmosphere gimmicks.
