Jack Byrne hasn't been mentioned on this page until your post there. Conversation evolved into a discussion on the media treatment of rugby and I thought I'd add a contribution. If tets feel it'd be more appropriate in another thread, I can move it, but he's posted a solely-rugby/football debate-related post himself. Don't blame me! :p

Jack Byrne comments on criticism of young Irish talent: http://www.balls.ie/football/jack-byrne-man-city-irish-young-talent-comments/311698

People don't give Ireland credit at the moment, we've got some good technical players that can compete on that level, people need to open their eyes and realise that. There's enough people slating Irish football at the moment, if they opened their eyes and looked, there actually are some good players playing at clubs in England and making a name for themselves.

Just for you, OwenGoal. ;)

On the other discussion, here's that piece of Ewan MacKenna's again where he outlines his feelings on the favourable treatment reserved for rugby in Ireland: https://ewanmackenna.wordpress.com/2015/03/02/think-this-is-rugby-country-then-think-again/

It was very good.

JB's comments are bang on. I kind of like the McKenna piece but as one of my mates says, rugby can't pick its followers.

Not to be pedantic or anything, but what he describes isn't Irish football. It's Irish players in English football.

He actually specifically says in the article he doesn't want that to happen.

DeLorean

He doesn't really.... unless "bed him in" and "make up the numbers" mean the same thing, which they don't. Presuambly there'd be some kind of an induction though, that almost goes without saying, especially for a player so young.

I'm not saying I should be in the team, I'm not saying anything like that because I'm still 19 and I'm still learning my trade but I'm not sure how many Irish players are playing in top leagues around Europe. That's obviously their decision to make. If they think I'm ready, I'll be ready whenever they want me. It would be nice if they did, but obviously they'd have to think that I'm ready to compete for a place.

I don't want to go there to make up the numbers and just be there for training. I want to go there because I think I'm good enough to be there and because I think I'm good enough to compete for a place.

Making up the numbers and being there for the training is what "in and around the senior squad" is. He's either ready or he's not. He might be.

It's pretty hard to judge him at the moment, he's not starting a lot of games in Holland, and hasn't scored or assisted a goal yet. The reports on his performances have been positive, but Cambuur are playing terrible at the moment and are early favourites for relegation.

I suppose training with the squad is going to be the first step no matter what. I'd interpret his comments as showing a big desire to actually compete for a place on the team if the chance arose, other than just making up the numbers, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't thrilled about any sort of a call up behind it all.

Cambuur did start terribly, with four big defeats in their first five games, but they went on a five game unbeaten run before being beaten by Heerenveen last weekend - unfortunately all those games unbeaten were draws so they haven't climbed out of the relegation zone - this mini-turnaround did coincide with Byrne starting to play after injury, so maybe he played a significant part in steadying the ship, even if he didn't contribute directly to any goals and at one point he was "hurled on the receipt", which has got to count for something.

Skip to the hour mark, folks. Well worth a listen. This lad has his head well screwed on and if he doesn't make it then it won't be for the lack of wanting or working for it.

Makes some great points about how different it is playing with Cambuur first team compared to the development squad at City. Also speaks about how he coped with his homesickness through football. And, Christ, he loves a bit of hard work.

Really hoping for the best with this lad.

Not only is it nobodies business,it's a right ignorant comment because it's actually lovely in there, there's some expensive gaffs and the average house would probably be around €300k!

How many other players are asked if their family is still living in X estate? The inference was clear and, apparently, misguided. They referred to how he's from inner-city Dublin too which was odd. Why not just Dublin?

I checked it myself last night. I assumed (wrongly) that it was the big block of flats that turns the corner from Clonliffe onto Poplar Row, hence why they made reference to it. Certainly the actual Clonliffe Gardens would appear to have a much glossier look to it, therefore why would they need to move?

I think it's an odd question to ask in the context (assuming Molloy doesn't know Byrne's family personally and isn't personally connected with the area himself). What was the point of it if not to imply something along the following lines: "Now that you're earning a bit more, have your family managed to escape that run-down inner-city area they used to live in?" Although, as YOP has pointed out, if that was indeed the subtle sentiment behind the question, it was based on an ignorant presumption anyway. Maybe that's harsh on Molloy, but a few people seem to have picked up on the possibility.

Watching it here. Coming up to half time and missed the first 25.

Cambuur were a goal down when I turned on. They equalised but Ajax went straight down the field and regained the lead. Cambus then hit the bar, before Ajax got a 3rd. Just scored a 4th as I type this. Some of the Cambuur defending leaves a lot to be desired, but this really flatters Ajax.

Byrne hasn't really been involved, but from what I have seen of him he is playing off the main striker. He is working hard and has a decent turn of pace, but the ball hasn't really come his way.

5-1 FT

First thing to be said is that Ajax are better than Cambuur. It is hard to say just how much better as it was a Cambuur were giving as good as they got until Ajax got the 2 goal lead. After that Ajax were happy to hold on to the ball, and in their haste to get back into it Cambuur were giving it back to them very easily on the rare occasions when they had the ball. Cambuur were opened up far too easily by Ajax, who were clinical. I can only remember the Cambuur keeper being given the chance to make 1 save, which he did. To their credit they did try to play football, but they were never going to out-Ajax Ajax.

Ajax are exactly what you would expect. A team of talented young players, who want to play the game the right way.

Byrne didn't look out of place among the Ajax players. For the 1st hour he was fairly isolated. When he did get the ball he looked tidy, but in truth he was never given an opportunity he could do anything with. What he didn't do was more interesting than what he didn't really. He didn't give up, and although he was visibly frustrated, he didn't let that get the better of him and start jumping into stupid challenges.

The last half hour was more interesting. They made a sub which seemed to allow him to drop back and play as a deep lying playmaker, mainly sitting just in front of the back 4, but with the freedom to get forward if he wanted to. He looked very comfortable in the role. He was never going to play a defence splitting pass from so deep, but what he was able to do was show his passing ability. That allowed them to hold onto the ball a lot better, and although they never looked like scoring, they enjoyed a lot more possession, and stopped conceding goals.

At one point the fullback lost the ball which allowed Ajax in. He found himself plugging a gap in the back 4, and made a very good interception which snuffed out the Ajax attack.

Nothing in that to suggest he will light up our midfield next summer, but equally nothing there that eliminates him from contention.

Loved Jack's interview on Off the Ball. Came across very genuine and obviously he hasn't been a victim of football's media training. Don't think he said 'as I say' or 'all credit to' once.
In contrast, Richard Keogh's interview after the 1st leg in Bosnia was awful. He said very little and yet said 'as you say' about 47 times.

Was the goal awarded to him? It was an OG according to the Sky Sports app.
According to the report on SC Cambuur's site: http://cambuur.nl/nieuws/strijd-en-passie-brengen-cambuur-de-eerste-zege/

Er werden meters gemaakt, duels gewonnen, aanvallen opgezet, het publiek werd beloond en toen Byrne een vrije trap net buiten de zestien richting Van Duin pegelde. Santos raakte de bal nog net even aan, genoeg voor 3-1.
running it through google translate

There were made gauges, won duels, organized attack, the audience was rewarded when Byrne and a free kick just outside the penalty pegelde direction van Duin. Santos hit the ball just a moment, enough for 3-1.
