'Nutjobs' facing life ban after Sligo chaos

DROGHEDA UNITED chairman Jim Agnew says that a small number of travelling supporters who caused trouble at the Showgrounds on Saturday will be banned for life. The visitors scored in injury-time to snatch a draw in an entertaining match with the league champions, but the action on the pitch was overshadowed by the behaviour of a section of Drogheda fans, which included pitch invasions and trouble around the ground before the game.

Sligo full-back Ross Gaynor, a former Boynesiders player, was sent off after a skirmish with away supporters who had encroached onto the pitch. A steward was also knocked to the ground and gardai were forced to intervene to help restore order. "It's the worst I've ever seen in my lifetime – from our supporters or any others," said Agnew, speaking on local radio station LMFM yesterday.
