Best performance of the season so far and almost unrecognisable compared to last week as Youths deservedly came out on top despite playing with ten for the final half-hour. Shane Keegan made a number of changes with Craig, Daryl, Gary and Clarkey starting in a team of Graham, Craig, Gary, Jamie, Jimmy, Clarkey, Crokey, Brian, Joey, and with Rocks and Daryl up front. First half had relatively few chances with Cobh getting the better ones. After five, Long picked up a yellow for a tackle for Cobh. After fifteen,Joey had a left-foot volley over the bar after a knock-down by Rocks. Cobh's first chance came after 20 but was knocked just wide of the post from a reasonable position. Five later, Joey had another effort but this time straight at the keeper. Cobh then nearly got on the sheet from a corner and that was followed by a Cobh forward being through but dragging his left foot effort wide. Graham then did well to push a cross/shot away one-handed and a quiet enough half finished with another yellow for Cobh for 0-0 at half-time.

Second-half began quietly enough and, after ten, Eric came on for Clarkey in a wide-right position. Wexford had tried to keep the ball down in the first and did the same in the second and it eventually paid dividends. After fifteen, Daryl was sent free down the left and his low cross found Eric in the clear who knocked it home low right for 1-0. This was followed almost immediately by a straight red for Joey after what looked like a fairly innocuous foul. However, Wexford looked the quicker round the pitch and the loss of the player didn't affect the balance of the game much. With 25 gone in the half, Eric was put through again and his shot was deflected past Birdsall for 2-0. On the half-hour, Brian won a free just outside the box which looked well inside and Jimmy knocked the free to the far post for Rocks to head home for 3-0. Cobh then managed a tap-in goal which was flagged for offside and Wexford were safe. Glen came on for Daryl Power who was excellent for what I think is a 16 year old with five to go and Shane then came on for his twin Brian. The match then finished with three more yellows, one for Meade for Cobh and Crokey and Glen for a tackle and a dive.

Big change from last week was the quality of the football from the home team - far more effort to retain the ball rather than aimless upfields and the newly introduced players played a big part in this. Cobh didn't have the sparkle of the first match in St. Colman's when they played us off the pitch and didn't seem to have the legs of the home team. 3-0 at full time with about 180 in attendance.

Nigel-Harps

I usually rely on the figure quoted in the local newspaper on Tuesday. I'll log it here then.
