Belfast native Sean Connor has been named the new boss of First Division side Sligo Rovers, landing a three-year contract at the Showgrounds where he succeeds Don O’Riordan, who parted company with Sligo earlier this year.

Mickey Feeney took over the reins on a caretaker basis after O’Riordan’s demise, and the popular coach is retained in the new structure, in which he will join Connor as assistant manager.

A native of Belfast, Connor played with Distillery in the Irish League before his career was cut short at the age of 24 following a car accident.

Now 37, he has held coaching posts in England and the USA, and is currently in the process of gaining a Uefa Pro Licence.

Club chairman Michael Toolan emphasised that the appointment was made with the long-term future of the club in mind.

He said: “The new manager will have ample time to assess his squad of players and to determine what improvements will have to be introduced for the 2005 season.

“The club does not believe in quick fixes and we have given the new manager the responsibility for nurturing and developing our youth programme, to ensure the major advances made by the club in this area are progressed further.”

Connor’s first game in charge will be against fellow mid-table side Athlone Town at the Showgrounds on Saturday night (October 1st).
