Great news. He was one of our best players before he left for Bohs. From what he said in The Echo, he doesent think he will play much this season. He said he might be better letting the injury fully heal and then get a solid pre-season under his belt. I think murray and bennett have done reasonably well this year but Derek will put them under pressure for a place and if he manages to get himself into the starting 11, he will be hard to shift.

hard to shift
Derek might be hard to shift but he's easy to turn. At best a good squad player. Great cover but we won't be winning anything with Derek as our regular centre half.

IMO he;s good cover at best
At least it will put pressure on the current incumbents, that there is a solid back up player just waiting to take their place.
Dolan will hardly re-instate a Murray Coughlan partnership will he? Id like to see what Derek d Benno could do.

It is a relief to see that the relationship between Derek and Dolan did not descend into an awkward stand-off. :)
OK, we might have different opinions about the guy's abilities.
But:
1. He is a useful player and will, IMO, put Dan Murray under pressure to hold his place.
2. In a month which was mostly filled with bad news, this is a good development. It was sickening to see him in danger of drifting out of soccer.
3. Now we can stop thinking "if only", and get to see what the guy is made of.
My guess: He will be in City's starting line up by the first game of next season.

Why would it have become an awkward stand off?
People have being saying for months that there has been a stand off between Derek and Dolan.
Does anyone here have any proof of this? Apart from 'net ill-conclused (if thats a word) conclusions!
Coughlan has been injured.....badly by all media accounts. He is welcome back, he welcomes his welcome back, so where is the problem?

Well I for one am delighted to welcome Derek back to the city fold. His arrival strengthens the squad and provides quality competition for places-just what city need.

he hasn't signed yet. just spillane taking a few quotes and making ahuge thing of it. for the record I'd like to see himself and Benno in the centre of defence IF he signs

Bohs won with Derek as first choice centre back.
Derek and Benno would be my first choice
Bohs fan.
Send on your right arm and you can have him back. Send on your left arm and you van have some more of our squad players ;)

I'd love to have the Derek Coughlan of 98 or of the Bohs league winning team back but I think that player is gone. With a year out of the game I think he'll struggle to get back to that level. Hope I'm wrong but I cant see it.
As regards Dan Murray I'd have Coughlan at his best ahead of him anyday. If City are to progress it has to be Bennett and an other as regulars. Not Benno and Murray/Coughlan 2004 vintage.
PS I never said that our squad was chock a block with better players than Coughlan
PPS The rovers boys will call round tonight to collect your arms for delivery to the Shed Friday night ;)

It is true to say he can be turned but most centre backs in this league can be turned. He is a terrific organiser, you will concede **** all from set pieces with him in your side and he will score a few as well. I think a lot of EL fans live in this dream world where they think their centre halfs should be pacey, good dribblers and able to open up the opposition with a terrific run. Get real, such players are a rarity in world football much less EL football. In our league if you haven't got a centre half who is dominant in the air & doesn't ball watch, you are toast.
Coughlan is a great centre half and I would give my right arm to have him back at Bohs.
Excellent points, find it very hard to disagree with any of that.
Derek & Benno it is then. Maybe move Dan Murray in to the midfield.
Or even up front, maybe he's the John Glynn replacement we have been waiting for ?

I would like to see Murry give it a go in mid field as well, storng little nut and at least when he makes runs from mid field he won't be caught ou of place. give him a couple of cracks at goal as well. Benno can pass the ball DC is a wall and it's what we need.

actually, thats interesting, dan was played in midfield a couple of times and looked ok. he does like to push forward and i'd say he relish the idea of being the midfield general captain of the team.

I think competition at the back will do no harm but Derek might not be back before the end of the season according to same report.
