The newly-registered party have made their electoral debut with a respectable 7% in Meath East, yet if they are to become a creditable nationwide party, voters will need to know what exactly they actually stand for. So far, all we know is that DDI want to introduce a system whereby referenda can be held through public petition, similar to Switzerland, and also to recall underperforming TDs (it's unclear what criteria this would be judged by). Perhaps there is a desire for a new party, but if DDI aim to fill the vacuum, they'll need to put some major flesh on the bones of their policies.

Sadly, it appears Ben "of the clan Giolla Rua" Gilroy is an Ayn Rand-style "sovereign citizen" (http://sinechara.blogspot.ie/2013/04/direct-democracy-ireland-who-are-they.html?m=1) wingnut.

The rather bizarre ceremony was conducted by Billy Maguire, a man who claims to be the president – ironically in a hereditary capacity - of the Irish Republican Brotherhood
