View Full Version : Transfer Fees

This is an interesting one. I know transfer fees are a relative rarity between Irish clubs, but in Football Manager I just shelled out €1.1 million for a Belgian (obviously unrealistic) and was wondering what's the record transfer fee paid by an Irish club for a player?

I have a suspicion it's probably Johnser Byrne to Shels but I'd like to be proved wrong. Obviously accounting for inflation is hard, but even so the early 00s was probably the boom time. On the same note, what's the most paid for a player in, say, the last 5 years?

Would have a guess that the only transfer money paid in the last five years was development fees. I remember 4 years ago Foster wanted to sign Bolger from UCD but they wanted 12k for him, Fingal paid it and then went out of business 2 weeks later. He then signed for us for nothing. Sean McCaffrey also paid Mervue Utd 10k last year in development fees for Mountney, Hanley and Cunningham.

Fingal never paid in the end.

We got "paid" in Setanta Cup prize money instead, which we wouldn't have gotten had Fingal stayed alive.

Yes, and less successfully, Robbie Martin too. Got €55k for Shane Barrett off Drogs before signing Martin though.

We paid for Gaffney no idea how much though. Was probably just a development fee too.

Harps paid 300k for Gary Beckett from Derry. What a player.

Was it true that Drogheda wanted to pay 28k + Keith Fahey for John Paul-Kelly?

The rumour definitely did the rounds online

Didnt Bohs pay big money for Trevor Molloy or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Yeah, I think it was either 30k or 50k. I remember telling him it was madness in the Bohs players bar. He seemed to feel differently.

Was Paul Doolin in charge of Drogs at the time. He is not Keith Faheys biggest fan. Doolins daughter on the other hand...

Bohs paid 27k for Molloy but I believe that was overtaken by the transfer of David Crawley from Dundalk to Shels... does that sound familiar to anyone?

Biggest waste of transfer fee? Bohs allegedly paying fcking Rovers 10k for Mark O'Brien...

We were supposed to get 30K for Faz when he went to Drogs. Instead we got a 5c in the euro. Cuunts.

Longfordian mentioned a transfer fee here http://foot.ie/archive/index.php/t-24170.html and this article from 2002 suggests there was a transfer fee being contemplated... http://www.independent.ie/regionals/argus/sport/other-sports/david-may-go-26917230.html I'm nearly sure it was a record transfer fee at the time, that exceeded Molloys...

Well if I said it, it's obviously right. No, I do still remember Shels paying money for him or at least agreeing to pay it! You could never rely on Oliver to actually cough up, god rest his soul.

Our former treasurer tells some tales of trying to get money we were owed for Sean Dillon out of him. They had some great roaring matches in his office apparently.

Sorry to burst your bubble DM, but Dundalk did pay a "compromise" fee to UCD.

I expect that this urban myth will continue though
