Monaghan United have been dealt a massive blow in their bid to avoid re-election to the eircom League as the club have been deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player.
The decision to deduct the points was taken at an eircom League meeting on Wednesday night. United included Jimmy Fullam in their line up against Athlone Town on Friday September 3rd, although the former Shamrock Rovers player was not properly registered with the First Division side.
Ironically, Athlone Town were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player against Monaghan United on the opening day of the season, when Michael McCann’s registration was not properly processed.
Monaghan’s standing in the First Division will drop as bottom side Limerick, who are three points behind United in the table have a better goal difference than Mick Cooke’s side.
