What's the significance of this jersey exactly?

I think its hideous but will probably buy one.

It didn't work for me. No matter. It's hideousness is there for all to see. :)

@Danny, I think it's something for O'Neills to flog to Paddys in the Great White North for P-Day. I think that's the height of it.

I think the Aussie one with UJ emblazoned on it is hideous-er.

I can't open Bonnie's link so I have no idea what this thread is about. The title kind of fits this though. I just came across the current Panathinaikos jersey and, although I remember Ardal O'Hanlon confirming they have no Irish link at all, it is fantastically Irish looking. According to Wikipedia there might be one slightly loose and dubious semi-Irish connection though.

The colours that were first used by the club in 1908 were red and white. In 1911, changed to green and white. In 1918, Michalis Papazoglou proposed the shamrock as emblem of Panathinaikos, symbol of harmony and good luck. He used to have it sewn on his shirt since he was competing for a club in his native Chalcedon, Constantinople. Papazoglou was possibly inspired by Billy Sherring, an Irish Canadian athlete who had won the Athens 1906 Olympic marathon wearing a white outfit with a big green shamrock on the chest.

Always wanted to pick up a Pana shirt especially since they changed the badge to just the shamrock. But they have had such a hideous sponsor I have never been able to bring myself to get one.

They were never for sale without the sponsor. They were just launched at the time without. Believe me, I tried to get one.
