Sky Blues interest in Hoolahan

September 16, 2004

Shelbourne winger Wes Hoolahan has won rave reviews for his performances with the club this season with the former Republic of Ireland international attracting the attention of a number of English sides including Coventry City.

Reports have suggested that a Sky Blues scout will be at Lansdowne Road tonight to run the rule over Hoolahan, who has been particularly impressive in Shels’ European campaign so far this season.

The fact that Hoolahan shares the same agent as Coventry City midfielders Graham Barrett and Michael Doyle is thought to have put the Championship side to the forefront in the race for the 22-year-old’s signature.

Hoolahan is under contract with Shels until 2006, but if Sky Blues manager Peter Reid hears a good report about the midfielder, the former Leeds and Sunderland boss is set to make a move for the winger when the transfer window reopens in January.

A Coventry spokesperson revealed that a scout for the club would be in attendance at Lansdowne Road tonight to see Hoolahan perform against Lille.

"The gaffer has been told a lot about Hoolahan and wants to have a look at him. No disrespect to the eircom League but it makes sense to have watched against top quality opposition.

Hoolahan has already been included in the Republic of Ireland senior squad after caretaker manager Don Givens included the youngster in the squad for the friendly with Greece in November 2002.

The first division in England really wouldn't suit him and I'd be gutted to see himgo but what are the odds that as soon as he moves to Coventry he walks right into the Irish team before he's even played a game
