I got sent an email a few days ago from Abbey Travel about a day trip. They probably have them on their website.

Talk of getting an 18k allocation for Wembley

ST Holders and 'known' away supporters were invited to register their interest on the FAI portal www.fai.ie/away/

If you havent got a login, Im sure an email to the FAI could get you sorted.

Minimum price €60/£52 admission (currently) for Irish fans. Up to €90 for a friendly. I kid you not.

Blame an FAI even greedy/stupid & incompetent than ours.

I wonder what Trap's senior charges both active and (temporarily) retired would say to him if he said to them he was resting them for this meaningless friendly in order to give youth its fling?!

Given the amount of club football most of them still play, "Thanks" probably...

That site says kick-off is at 12AM...

Surely can't be right for a Wednesday game, but is 12AM actually mid-day or mid-night?

Midnight. A default time no doubt until the real time is confirmed.

Midnight.
From now on I'll remember that one, as the opposite of what I use to believe.

There don't appear to be any available for the away section on there despite the site offering the option to buy.

Ante meridiem means before mid-day, so 12AM would be the midnight prior, or the 12 before mid-day that day, whilst post meridiem refers to after mid-day, so 12PM would, erm, also be midnight, but the midnight crossing over into the following day?

geysir
06/02/2013, 9:41 AM
If you say so :)

10am 11am 12pm 1pm or 10am 11am 12am 1 pm
which sounds more obvious?

DannyInvincible
06/02/2013, 9:46 AM
The latter obviously, but, literally-speaking, it doesn't really make a huge deal of sense in that there doesn't appear to be any way to denoting 12:00 mid-day by using "AM" or "PM".

The main problem is that I think you have to register with The FA? Which seems a bit odd and arrogant even for an organisation as detached as them...

And the KO is a default time, would suggest an 'early' KO as the local cops won't want thousands of drunken football fans milling round later in the day, especially given the potential for trouble.

That would be, if you had a hang up about denoting midday.

DannyInvincible
06/02/2013, 10:04 AM
Neither "AM" nor "PM" can logically refer to mid-day though in that ante refers to before, post refers to after and meridiem refers to mid-day itself. Maybe "12M" would be apt.

Well I presume everybody associates AM with the early morning, and recognises 12 midnight as the time a new day starts. Therefore it changes from PM to AM at the beginning of a new day. I'm not sure that helps at all :o

Not really, logic is a 4th dimension for me
I'm old (national) school, I need a rhyme
30 days have sept, april, june and november, all the rest have 31 except ....
Easter is the first sunday after the first full moon after the 21st march (I think)

I've often seen, for example, "01:20" pm, postfixed pm that is, written.

I don't know what the big deal is its straight forward, i've also seen 12 pm and 12 am written.

That's obviously an hour and twenty minutes after mid-day, but how would you indicate mid-day itself using "AM" or "PM"?

You stop being so pedantic and say PM. Or you could just say that all but the first split second of the minute of 12.00 is after midday, so strictly speaking it is PM.

i usually encounter the same conundrum when writing times down in emails or whatever and i usually end up resorting to "noon"... such a cop out... :(

BonnieShels

When writing times I resort to the easy and obvious 0000, 0100, 0200, 0300... 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400... 2100, 2200, 2300.

How so many of ye on this normally intelligent board have confused 12AM and 12PM is remarkable.

This match will be played in 90 minutes (subject to injury time), so the match should finish approx 105 mins (1 hour and 45 mins) after kick off.

I'm glad they cleared that up.

Don't buy the programme...
Making amends

The England programme for the home game against the Republic of Ireland in May will feature Chelsea’s Ashley Cole on the front cover. There will be a pitch presentation to Cole to mark his recent 100th appearance against Brazil when, bizarrely, left back rival Leighton Baines was the cover choice.

It was bizarre because seeing as it was Cole's 100th appearance for England why not put him on the cover; instead he's on the cover for the game marking his 101st appearance.

DannyInvincible

Oh, I completely misunderstood, ha. By "cover choice", I thought they meant Baines was cover for Coles on the bench, which wouldn't be odd at all, given both are left-backs.

SkStu

Oh "cover choice".... I thought it meant his replacement...

But still, why not buy it (apart from Cole being a contemptible c*nt).

I suppose Ashley, a class player for England at full back down through the years, should have had his 100th cap recognised with appropriate respect on the program of the prestigious game against the illustrious Brazil, but it might have looked a bit foolish had he picked up an injury and wasn't available for the game.

I was explaining how it was bizarre in AB's eyes for the benefit of DI. I care not for the cover star.

'FA warning sparks fears over Wembley friendly': http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/fa-warning-sparks-fears-over-wembley-friendly-29163887.html

The English FA has warned their supporters to stop chanting "No surrender" in an attempt to avoid the prospect of crowd trouble at the friendly against Ireland at Wembley in May.

The chant of "No surrender to the IRA" – which was aired in San Marino last Tuesday – has blighted home and away games in recent times and the FA have moved to highlight their concerns in an attempt to ease tensions ahead of the game against the Ireland on May 29. The two countries have not met since the 1995 game at Lansdowne Road which was abandoned after 27 minutes because of crowd trouble in the away section.

The English FA are expected to liaise with their counterparts ahead of the game, with a large Irish support expected to be present at Wembley.

While the behaviour of Irish fans has been excellent in recent years, this game could attract an element that do not usually travel to away fixtures.

England fans last night accused the FA of potentially increasing the risk of unrest by drawing attention to the song during a testing 48 hours for their governing body. Mark Perryman, an England fans' spokesman, has admitted he is bewildered by the FA's plea to end the chanting and fears it may merely have magnified the problem.

"What I find extraordinary is the statement about 'No surrender' has been linked to the alleged racist chanting," Perryman said. "I can't understand why the FA have suddenly launched into it without offering any explanation.

"They have now drawn attention to it and when you tell someone not to chant something, the chances are that more people will chant it."

Discussions are to be held with Fifa next Tuesday regarding the alleged racist chanting towards Rio Ferdinand, with the England international revealing his own disbelief yesterday.

He tweeted: "You expect+accept banter from fans on the terraces as its part of what makes the game great, but racism is not banter, & from ya own fans. WOW. Always a small minority who ruin it for others."

He later added: "Let's not jump to conclusions and assume though as it might just have been banter. We'll see after the investigation."
