I'm just wondering, what is your favourite League of Ireland goal?

What's your favourite goal, by your own team, or by another team, that you've seen in your time watching League of Ireland football?

It's an ongoing discussion on our own forum and I'm interested to hear the stories from other clubs too and their favourite goals.

John O'Flynn against Drogheda Utd. in 2003.

Think it got Goal of the Season on Eircom League Weekly that year too.

Rolled the ball with studs with his right onto his left foot that he curled from corner of the penalty area into the top corner.

Into the Shed end as well for the cherry on top.

Late August/early September 2007. "Away" to Shamrock Rovers in Tolka. I think Drogheda were the only away team to win there v Rovers up until that point that season (open to correction on that).

We were really starting to get a run together in an attempt to stay up (ultimately failed of course). Even enough first half, we were the better team in the second, without scoring. The ball breaks to Dave Mooney as the board goes up for injury time and he slotted it home. I don't think I've ever celebrated a goal as much before or since (apart from cup final's and all that, but they're too obvious for this thread).

That was the night I really started to think we would stay up. Alas....

I would say that too but going back to 2003-2006 era, Georgie, Flynnie, Doyler, i think there are a sack full of goals from that time. But if i had to pick i'd be including Caulfields, Morley era as well, absolute gems, great to watch. Just to be buzzing coming out of the ground, and everyone around you the same way. Very hard to choose just one.

I have to say the Pat Sullivans screamer from 30 yards out in Europe was a joy to watch as well, loved every bit of it.

Glen Crowe v St. Pats, half volley from 30yards into SC End around 2001.
Paul Byrne v Bray in Carlisle Grounds (same season) from the halfway line. No cameras at that one but anyone who was lucky enough to be there will agree it was a bit special.

Crowe's...

Favourite has to be Chris Shields in the 788th minute of extra time against Monaghan to take us to penalties in the relegation playoff.

Daire Doyle against, I think, Drogheda the same season was pretty special as well. The ball broke loose from a corner, and he hit it on the volley from a good 30 yards out into the top corner. One of those where the whole crowd can see him shaping up to shoot and fully expect it to clear the bowling alley!

John O'Flynns goal into the St. Annes end off his arse from Dan Connors clearance in 2005 was pretty special too

Think thats the best I've seen against us. One of those 'oh **** me' moments.

Best I've seen is Curtis Fleming v Bohs in 89/90. Took it up in his own half, beat two and rifled it into top corner from 40 yards. No cameras there.

Favourite is Forrester's lob against Rovers this year.

Thats the first time I've ever seen that goal and it's up there win one of my favourites as well. Classic stuff.
Harry McLoughlins v Bohs in 1983 has always been my favourite, followed more recently by Quigleys v Shams in Tallaght.

The bit where the kid kicks the ball out from the other side of the net and it hits Paul Campbell [?] who's lying on the ground is almost as good as the goal.

Great thread!

I remember this one against Shelbourne in 2003 at Dalymount. Such a good goal it was it nearly tore the roof off the place

Eddie Annand vs Kilkenny? (open to correction)......Gets the ball on half way line with back to goals, flick over defenders head, beats a couple of defenders, and ends with a cheeky chip over the keeper.

I've never saw footage of the goal since, only going on memories......which probably makes all the more special.

That Annand goal is my favourite one as well. Would love if there was footage of it. Kilkenny alright. Think we won 3-0.

Don't think it's online, but the two injury-time goals to beat a Shels in their full Olliepomp in the League Cup semi-final - the day that the FAI had confirmed the LC winners would get a Setanta spot as a sop to Ollie - will take some beating.

Particularly the second one where Robbie Martin rounded the keeper outside the box and walked the ball into the net. I like goals that you can see coming from a long way away. :)

That was a bit special alright, although i though it hit the underside of the bar and Crowe rolled it into an empty net?

Best LoI goal I've ever seen was from Paddy McCourt for Rovers against Bray in Dalymount going back about 7/8 years ago, world class. He actually scored 2 wonder goals that day.

Not sure what my favourite Bray goal is being honest, always remember Pip Keogh scoring a brilliant over head kick in Terryland against Galway

I never thought I'd see it again, yet on Friday night last at the Carlisle Grounds, Bray with the chips stacked against us, out of the bag came this gem.

2 - 0 down at half time. Down to ten men. pulled a goal back with 18 minutes left. An equaliser not given by the linesman. Final throw of the dice by Bohemian boss Stephen Kenny and he sends on out of favour Paul Byrne (ex-Celtic).

Byrne recieves the ball from defending a corner 10 yards inside the Bohemians half. takes two steps close to the right touchline. Looks up. Sees the keeper off his line. Swings the right peg at the ball, concentration, got to get this right. Not much time left. Floats the ball into the Bray half. Rising. Rising. Starts to dip as it comes over the 18 yard line. Keeper starts to look like he's struggling. The ball starts to come down. The keeper scrambles. The ball comes down. The keeper stretches. The ball clears the outstretched right hand of the keeper and hits the crossbar. Down down down. Over the line. and back out onto the post. Beautiful. Poetry.

Bray 2 - 2 Bohemians

But this credits it to Crowe.... :(

Remember that game we beat shels 4-1 way way way ago, one of my personal favourite goals is the one Eric Levine scored, when the shells keeper kicked the ball into his arse and it bounced straight in:D
