View Full Version : Cup semi final replay - TV coverage?

Is the cup semi final replay between Shels and Derry being shown live on RTE?
I've seen nothing to suggest that it is, and if it's not then it is an absolute disgrace from RTE. Shows how tokenistic their screening of the games at the weekend was. I will, and I would encourage others to, write a letter of complaint to them regarding the issue.
It must be the only national broadcaster in the world that would show a domestic cup semi final but not the replay. A show of utter contempt for the biggest cup competition on the island.

There was no mention of it at the end of the Dundalk-Pat's game. In fact, Peter Collins concluded yesterday's coverage with something along the lines of, "See you for the final!", which struck me as peculiar as the two finalists had yet to be decided. But that's RTÉ for you...

There has been Semi-Final replays for the past 2 years and neither have been shown, don't ever recall any in years gone back either.
The short guaranteed notice of 3 days is not conducive for producing a live match, also RTÉ are committed to show X amount of live matches and they won't go beyond their commitment at such a late stage in the season when they have live matches scheduled for the title run-in.

They didn't show the replay last year either. Don't remember anyone up in arms about it.

No one is up in arms about it,anyway if was Sligo that was involved yis would be complaining about the affect on the attendance blah da blah!!
Maybe Setanta will pick it up?

Not that big of a crime in fairness, RTE do their best. If the FAI did half as much to improve the league as RTE do, it would help.
Far more pressing concerns in this League at the moment than arguing whether or not a Cup Semi-Final replay should be televised.

I think all will agree with you,but don't put all arguments in the one wee parcel.50 other threads are open for those who want to listen/argue/respond about Galway Uniteds demise.

Then do as you say and take your comments elsewhere. No wonder threads get dragged off topic when everytime a GUFC head posts here, this gets dragged up. Yes the situation in Galway is a problem, but it's one on a long list of problems which I was referring to

They're as bad as each other. RTE only show games because they're contractually obliged in order to be able to screen the internationals.
My point with this thread is that it's disgraceful in terms of the image it portrays about how little the FAI cup means. It's a semi final of the national cup. 3 days notice shouldn't matter a toss when RTE have nothing better to be showing anyway. It wouldn't matter if it was the majority of other national cup competitions in the world.

The thread isn't about the FAI though,it's about RTE and their failure to cover the semi final repaly of the top professioonal cup competion in Ireland

They feel they do have something better to show. It doesn't really matter that you disagree
I can guarantee you Shels don't want it on TV either. As has been said, if the FAI wanted this on TV it would be. but they've no real desire for that so that's that.
Well I was gonna say about the fact they have to cater for their regular wednesday night viewers but then I looked at the schedule on RTE2 wednesday night
19:00 Football's Next Star
19:30 One Born Every Minute
20:30 Only Fools and Horses
21:00 Happy Endings
21:30 CSI
Have a 7pm-7:15pm kickoff there is nothing there that anyone would be to upset if they postponed(maybe CSI but it always the same anyhow)
Its not about upsetting people. its about the cost of covering the game live (Outside Broadcast unit, 5/6 cameras etc etc) and the expected income from advertisers. The above progammes cost very little, and make more
RTE sport has a low enough budget, and irish football isn't its priority.
No real point in trying to argue what they should/shouldn't be doing
If Shels or Derry streamed the game live on their websites with club commentators RTE would be complaining to the FAI!

jeeeeez no way are we 'missing' a 30+ year old repeat of Only Fools and Horses for some football match that is not even rugger or bogball

Nothing like being bottom of the league and getting beaten in a cup semi final to put you in good form for the week.

How do they do their best? It would be simple for them to show the replay they are not, hardly their best is it?

In fairness to RTE, they just showed 2 live games at the weekend, and they're showing another live game this weekend coming as well as a highlights package last night.
What more do people want from them? They're not exactly sky sports. Cop yourselves on.

What is it, 24 live games a year? An hourly highlights package a week, granted it's not all star coverage, but it's far better than Eircom League weekly, and the old practice of 10 live games a year.
FAI Cup action from 1.30-6pm last Sunday, not bad going either

Additional expence (at a very cash strapped company) and the necessary logistical arrangements for a match that will hardly draw a huge audience. While we slag off current RTE coverage it is by far the best I can ever remember by a very long way.

They are doing it because they have to, not because they want to.
They are doing it because they have to, not because they want to.
And they don't want to, because advertisers have no interest. Its a business decision

that seems right. according to memory the last time a FAI Cup semi final replay was televised was the famous Bohs Pats replay in 2003 where Pats won 4-3!

Couple that with them being host broadcaster at Lansdowne Road on Friday I reckon that that wouldn't be helping as well.
Anyway, I'll be in Tolka. WHOOP!

Why only 1,500 for the semi-final of the Cup.
Why only 1,500 for the semi-final of the Cup.
Wednesday night, and its double what they get for normal games. Shels have had a poor enough season, and their manager is botha ****, and plays disgusting football. Neither of which help bring in crowds

Pleased Derry won. Shels are miserable hoofballers, and I think I'm right in saying that Derry will bring a lot more to the final...?

RTE are contracted to show the cup semi-finals. They're not obliged to show replays of this or any round, and don't.
RTE now devote a highlights package of 5 games a week and 30 minutes of waffle on Monday nights. That is not very different to TV3's 5 games a week and 30 minutes of waffle on Monday nights, when they had the rights. The only difference is a couple of hours in the timing.
The EL weekly show was only 30 minutes long. So it was 10 minutes of goals, 15 minutes of action and 5 minutes of adds.

Sorry MYPOST but MNS is by far the best LOI show todate. Admittitedly we all have suggestions how it could be better but it is far superior to any previous efforts.
I think people need to remember this is not SKY Sports, it is very much a minority sport that attracts small audiences. The likes of Champions/Europa League games come prepackaged and with guaranteed higher audiences (and consequental advertising possibilities for RTE). Personally I think most presenters on MNS add to the package (especially for new fans we are trying to attract) and nobody can question the enthusism of the presenters for LOI.
I would not suggest for one second we should not continue to encourage RTE to improve coverage but slagging off a good product (at a time RTE have significant financial difficulties) is not the best way to do it.
Why only 1,500 for the semi-final of the Cup.
I'd imagine the fact it was played on a Wednesday night had alot to do with it.

The best show RTE have done generally was their Friday Sportsnight on Radio 1 they used to have. Used to be a brilliant show. It was a terrible day for the league when that got cut.
MNS has many problems (sparse highlights, single camera angle, crap music background to all games, several boring pundits) but it is still better than TV3's old effort. BUT it must be pointed out that TV3 weren't obliged to do that show (and this is probably the only time I'll ever defend TV3 on anything!).

MNS is absolute light-years ahead of the old Eircom League Weekly programme.
Alike Adamd164, I believe it has many problems, and I especially hate only having one camera angle with really awful attempts at close up views of things, but until we all start our own highlights show, we're stuck with this, and I believe they're doing a fairly good job under the circumstances.

Just on the cameras, or lack there of. I cant see RTE ever sending another camera to grounds .... unless something changes ...... and that's either clubs supplying the camera, cameraman and footage that can be used ..... or crowds increase by 500% (at a rough guess) and RTE can generate a bit of revenue from the programming.
If every team had at least one traveller in it, TV3 would televise every game.
