Here's one to get the debate rolling. Just pick the finest eleven players to have worn the green jersey for the Republic. Here goes mine.
1. Packie Bonner
2. Denis Irwin
3. Steve Staunton
4. Kevin Moran
5. Paul McGrath
6. Roy Keane
7. John Giles
8. Liam Brady
9. Frank Stapleton
10. John Aldridge
11. Damien Duff
Alright I have controversially included Duff but he will be the greatest left-winger we produce for a while. Niall Quinn, Ronnie Whelan, Tony Dunne and Robbie Keane, amongst others, miss out.
very hard to do this properly as i have only a kowledge of the teams since the eoin hand era..and not b4 that when i'm sure we had some great players that might not have gotten the exposure they do now...
what about tony galvin for duff though
other then that a damn good side seanie
what a midfield giles, brady, keano..how would you play that..give giles a free role or what?
you have no right winger..houghton was also a class act?
Dunno if i'd pick aldridge. Compare his scoring rate at club level to that for ireland and there's a massive gap. I'd go for quinny. Houghton too maybe. Damn good team though.
Can only comment on who i've seen but...

Completely forgot about Houghton - I'd probably include him instead of Duff, but this would completely unbalance my selection. I put Giles on the right wing because that's where he started his career at United, but I'm sure he wouldn't be too happy to be taken out of his customary central playmaker role.

are you sure thats not the u-21 team? ain't no way o'brien & o'shea will play together in the WC as they're too inexperienced.
For some reason mick mccarthy doesn't rate mcphail (Premiership,CL etc....) & has given Reid(1st season in english 1st division) a lot more opportunities.
