Ireland finished joint 54th with Cameroon, UAE and the Dominican Republic, some of the countires that finished above us were Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Chinese Taipei, Lithuania, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Iran, Ethiopia, Belarus, Hungary and Romania.

Surely we can compete with these countries on a world stage

But look at a country like India (billion or so people) & they only for 1 or 2 medals.

Aye really depends what you got in for.....look at us compared to these countires in fotoball (second round of WC), Rugby (triple crown) and hurling......ok the last one's a bit unfair but ya get ma point.
Not sure if the Olympics are still the biggest sporting event in the world but looks like we're just not diving head-first into them the way we do in rugby and football-while Chinese Taipei doesn't have much else going for them....

Having said that I think even though we just got 1 medal and in-gur-land got 30 it means more that Irish people actually knew when we one medals while lot's of English didn't give a damn......lot's not even knowing who Kelly Holmes is

Don't belittle those countries either....Hungary has won the most amount of olympic medals of any country who's not hosted the games
