I think the best result here is for a Croatia win, which is what I expect.

Italy winning is not very good.

Or a draw. Croatia win then they are on six points and we will need to beat Spain.

I was thinking an Italian win would suit us, no? Italy beat croatia 1-0, we draw with Spain, we beat Italy 1-0, we go through.

With a Croatia win we'd have to beat Spain.

Anyone who has a link to a decent stream for this, it would be much appreciated, also the Ireland game later.

An Italy win is exactly what we want. A Croatia win is the worst result for us, especially if we only draw later.

No problem!! ;)

Ideal would be a narrow Italy win with Modric picking up a booking to rule him out of the Spain match.

Pretty sure best result for us is an Italy win over Croatia. See all the permutations here:

The problem with a Croatia win is they would have nothing to play for on match day 3, having accumulated 6 points which no one could best. This scenario assumes an Ireland/Spain draw, which is the min we need. A Spain win v. Croatia, especially likely w/ Croatia looking to 2nd round, would put Croatia on 6, Spain 5, us 4 if we beat Italy, and Italy 3.

Looks like both Italy and Spain will be getting the early bus home.

Since a draw with Spain is the realistic positive outcome for Ireland, operating from that, an Italian win is the optimum result here without a doubt. That set of results eliminates our reliance on the result between Croatia/Spain to as much of a degree as possible. We'd need to beat Italy and just need a winner, any winner, in the other game.

And in the event of a draw in that game we could still potentially still scrape through on GD.

But, whatever, Ireland need at least four points in the next two games.

A draw would be best.

A draw would be best.

Two draws today and we'd need Spain to drop points to Croatia in what would be a very competitive game. I know you seem to have little regard for Spain. but they're more then a match for this Croatian side, especially on the evidence of this game so far.

Seems like we made the Croats look a lot better than they actually are. Italy giving them a bit of a chasing here.

Italy should be a few up. Get Balotelli off and they could put it away with Di Natale (is that right?)

Pirlo is playing well for Italy. Its a pleasure to watch such a player perform.

Extremely bad...unless we beat Spain, but it would make the last game much more competitive than if Italy win this.

What it shows is neither Spain or Italy are the teams they are made out to be,
both beatable.

NeverFeltBetter

Interesting to note for any conspiracy fans: If it stays like this and Spain beat us, Spain and Croatia could engineer a 2-2 draw that would send them both through.

Italy excellent in the first half but they just stopped playing at half-time. Started settling for the 1-0 from too far out.

Hmmm maybe.

It means if we draw tonight we can't finish above Croatia in the final table

5. If Ireland and Spain draw and Croatia and Italy draw:

Croatia 4

Spain 2

Italy 2 (interchangeable with Spain)

Ireland 1

Ireland would then qualify if they beat Italy and Spain dropped points to Croatia. They could not finish higher then Croatia. If Ireland draw with Italy, Italy qualify (unless Spain win).

Spain will be all out to beat Croatia in their last game.

I reckon an Italy win is our best bet, given Traps legendary status in Italy. Beat Spain and then play out the worlds least competitive draw v Italy and it's all smiles at the final whistle

Why ?

Croatia will still need a result against Spain - who will only have 2pts - thats if we are still in with a shout.

Because it means we have to win tonight. An Italy win would have left us in with a chance with a draw against Spain.

If we draw with Spain, beat Italy and Croatia and Spain draw we'll go through.
Still there's no chance of the first 2 of those happening.
If Spain beat Croatia we need to hammer Italy to get our gd ahead of Croatia.

Spain will get 3 points max so will Italy meaning we can qualify with 4 points. Simples.
