Galway United 4-0 Athlone Town
The trans-Shannon derby ended in a one-sided encounter at Terryland Park on Friday night, with the in-form Galway strike pairing of David O’Dowd and Damien Dupuy firing three of the four goals to put paid to the challenge of Athlone Town.
The impressive partnership of O’Dowd and Dupuy has kept 11-goal top scorer Barry Moran out of the side in recent weeks, and if Galway can maintain this sort of form they could well benefit from any slip-up on the part of the top three over the closing three months of the season.
Galway remain seven points off third-placed Bray Wanderers with a game more played, but this is their third straight win – which includes a victory over Bray – and they have built up a decent momentum in recent weeks.
Athlone, on the other hand, are in the doldrums: this was their fifth straight league defeat, and the second successive away game in which they have conceded four goals.
Mixie Harty put Galway ahead early on, and Frenchman Dupuy doubled the tally midway through the half.
Dupuy added his second of the night, and a remarkable eighth in 10 games for Galway, with a close-range finish shortly after the interval, and O’Dowd got in on the act on 66 minutes – shortly before making way for Moran, the second top scorer in the division.
Galway United: Gough, R. Frawley, C. Frawley, Keady, Quirke, Harty, Carter, Herrick (Fitzgerald, 79), Casey (O’Brien, 65), O’Dowd (Moran, 68), Dupuy.
Athlone Town: Loughman (Fennelly, 45), O’Keeffe, S. Kelly, A. Kelly (Hope, 45), Silke, Hayes (Murphy, 45), McNicholas, Rushe, Collins, McCann, Davoren.
Referee: M. Gough (Limerick).
