Galway United 4-0 Athlone Town
The trans-Shannon derby ended in a one-sided encounter at Terryland Park on Friday night, with the in-form Galway strike pairing of David O’Dowd and Damien Dupuy firing three of the four goals to put paid to the challenge of Athlone Town.

The impressive partnership of O’Dowd and Dupuy has kept 11-goal top scorer Barry Moran out of the side in recent weeks, and if Galway can maintain this sort of form they could well benefit from any slip-up on the part of the top three over the closing three months of the season.

Galway remain seven points off third-placed Bray Wanderers with a game more played, but this is their third straight win – which includes a victory over Bray – and they have built up a decent momentum in recent weeks.

Athlone, on the other hand, are in the doldrums: this was their fifth straight league defeat, and the second successive away game in which they have conceded four goals.

Mixie Harty put Galway ahead early on, and Frenchman Dupuy doubled the tally midway through the half.

Dupuy added his second of the night, and a remarkable eighth in 10 games for Galway, with a close-range finish shortly after the interval, and O’Dowd got in on the act on 66 minutes – shortly before making way for Moran, the second top scorer in the division.

Galway United: Gough, R. Frawley, C. Frawley, Keady, Quirke, Harty, Carter, Herrick (Fitzgerald, 79), Casey (O’Brien, 65), O’Dowd (Moran, 68), Dupuy.

Athlone Town: Loughman (Fennelly, 45), O’Keeffe, S. Kelly, A. Kelly (Hope, 45), Silke, Hayes (Murphy, 45), McNicholas, Rushe, Collins, McCann, Davoren.

Referee: M. Gough (Limerick).

top class weekend for us ... other results in the division really went our way as well. I've been looking at our remaining fixtures though and we will really need to pull off some big results against the current top 4 teams- mostly they are away from home.

we can't afford to lose again really if we want promotion.

Galway United 4 Athlone Town 0

Two goals either side of half-time gave United a comfortable victory over Athlone Town. Last May when United played Athlone in St. Mels Park Damien Dupuy watched from the terraces, last night he scored two and set up two and was a constant threat to Athlone Town with his tireless running and workrate.

United meant business from the off and were determined to maintain their good run against a side that lost their four previous league matches. On two minutes Fran Carter played in David O'Dowd and with just the keeper to beat Graeme Loughman did enough in the Town goal to force O'Dowd to push his effort over. Seven minutes later the first goal came, Damien Dupuy collected a long ball over the top and ran into the box, Mixie Harty took the ball off the French striker a powered the ball in off the post.

On 24 minutes United went two up after some good play by O'Dowd picked out Dupuy who ran in from the right and from a narrow angle squeezed the ball past Loughman. Six minutes later Mick Quirke came in from the left and attempted a right foot curler that went fractionally wide.

United had two more chances after to extend their lead before the break, on 33 minutes Mark Herrick sent a free just over, while on 37 minutes ex-Athlone player Ronan Frawley should of scored when a he powered a header straight at the keeper from ten yards out after a Ryan Casey free kick.

The second half started like the first and United attacked from the off. On 49 minutes a brilliant through ball by Mixie Harty picked out Dupuy who gathered the ball 40 yards out and ran clear and placed the ball between the legs of sub keeper Anthony Fennelly for his eight goal in ten outings.

On 60 minutes United should of went four up after a Casey cross was headed over by O'Dowd from six yards out. The young striker made amends for the miss when he put United four up with the simplest of goals on 64 minutes. Dupuy intercepted a weak O'Keefe back pass and he rounded the keeper and from the end line squared the ball back for O'Dowd who rolled it into the empty net.

Athlone did have two chances to get on the score sheet, on 69 minutes John McNicholas collected a short free and blasted the ball off the cross bar. On 73 minutes the same player headed over an open goal after a Damien Rushe cross was palmed into his path by Alan Gough. United nearly got goal number five on 76 minutes when sub Barry Moran was played in by Harty but keeper Fennelly did enough to to put him off and the ball went inches wide.
