Named for qualifiers at end of month against potugal, ukraine and israel. Stand out names are prob murray, carruthers, and forde. Pity george from celtic is injured. No conor smith, graham burke or roberts of arsenal which seems strange but one spot left to be annonced and maybe they are injured.

Where is this alan smith lad from?

i'm not trying to open up a can of worms but just wondering as wouldn't have thought too many irish youngsters at rangers.

he's from Cork, but Rangers signed him from Crumlin

I know of another goalkeeper from Dublin who has been over to Rangers on trial in the last year. However I think he is going to an English club. Was treated very well over there though. Seemingly Ally McCoist is a very decent man.

All a bit low key for these qualifiers obviously with the senior send off this weekend. Drennan out injured unfortunately i think he would have been up top on his own shame good finisher. lyons from ucd in who looks handy strange no burke or roberts seein very few strikers involved. Must be best midfield we have put out at this level since the heady days of mcphail(god he was amazing underage), quinn and partridge(he was crazy amazing underage)

Just kicked off against Ukraine. We probably need a decent win to have any chance of grabbing the one qualifying spot. By all accounts we battered the Portuguese and were beaten by a sucker punch own goal on the counter in the final minutes.

U19 squad announced.

Big suprise that 16 year old, Castlebar Celtic Player and U17 captain Noe Baba has been called up. Best of luck to him.

I'd still like to see a few more homebased players in the squad. Does Doolin actually watch any of the u-19 league here I wonder?

Great to see grealish in there. Surprised no roberts who scored at weekend maybe inverness wont let him go. Baba is with the 17s this week seems a massive jump for a lad who is not in full time football if he stil at castlebar

I'd imagine any player of a high enough standard would need to be in or around the first team in the League of Ireland.

Why though? What makes reserve and under 19 club football over there technically better than here?

But since you asked, off the top of my head.

Waterford United - Seani Maguire
Derry City - Ryan Curran
Finn Harps - Cathal McDaid, Jordan Duffy
St Pats - Chris Forrester (I think he's underage?)
Limerick - Cian Collins

Let's put it like this most of the decent reserve teams in the Premier League would walk the League of Ireland.

The evidence of science, reason and logic and not of magic, irrationality and otherworldiness.

Are you seriously asking that? Just look at how we stack up every year in the Europa League and Champions League qualifying matches. I think all the Irish teams were out in July this time.

Are you seriously asking that? Just look at how we stack up every year in the Europa League and Champions League qualifying matches. I think all the Irish teams were out in July this time.

And how did the British reserve teams do?

Pointless argument.

Forrester is overage. Maguire from Waterford was in the last squad. Doolin clearly thinks he has better

Apart from Baba with Castlebar (who's outrageously good by all accounts), there's Coombes (Pats) and Lenihan (Cork) from the u19 league representing home. Pepper (now with Inverness, formerly pats u19s) and Sweeney (Reading/Bray) also show the u19 league here is starting to produce players.

Both of those lads unvolved in u18 squads last year when home based too. There's no agenda. Doolin picks his best squad. 3 of the 18 based in Ireland this time. Players like Maguire and Byrne off Bohs have been in recent squads.

Arguing over whether a 19 year old with Man Utd or a 19 year old with Cork is better based on the club they're with is pointless. Plenty of awful footballers have come through the Premier League academies. Plenty of good footballers have come through the LOI. They'll all find their level eventually

I wouldn't say it's technically better, but I think in terms of physical development the players in England are better able to mix it at this level, even if they're not as good technically. And I think if an Irish-based player is good enough to be playing international football he's generally going to be at least on the fringes of the first team, e.g. Sweeney, Lenihan.

Let's put it like this most of the decent reserve teams in the Premier League would walk the League of Ireland.
The dozens of Irish youngsters who return from the English academies each summer and struggle to mix it in the Leinster Senior League beg to differ. League of Ireland teams routinely beat Premier League reserve teams. It's not so long since Bohs' reserve side "slayed" a near full-strength Aston Villa side.

Good win well done lads. Cant see a rationale for grealish not getting a game especially seein that Miele came on who is a similarly attacking midfileder and only joined squad as injury replacement. Doolin has a woeful record of falling out with players brady, duffy mceleney mcginty hopefully nothing similar here

The two-day turnover until the Macedonia game, and then Germany three days later means he'll have to use the whole squad. That would be a tough schedule for most senior pros, so I can see why he'd be keeping a few faces fresh for the tougher games.
