there are a lot of ways to look at this.

1. pirate radio breeds the presenters of the futute - fact

2. pirate radio provide a service in certain areas - fact

3. pirate radio gives people specialised radio that they can't get for licenced operaters - fact

but its illegal, simple as that...they are making money from illegal actions. no tax paid, no vat paid....completly illeagal.

i've worked in pirate radio on and off for a few years and the only ones making any money are the owners with ads, the presenters get NOTHING except the chance of a licenced station coming after them.

it has its positive and negative points but if i pay 100,000 for a licence to broadcast, why should some one do the same for free, its the licenced stations that are putting the pressure on com reg to shut these guys down.

even when the licenced stations are creaming the talent from them in the long run.

Broadcasting illegally can interfere with licensed broadcasts by commercial users of radio frequencies or emergency services. The reason radio frequencies are controlled is due to the fact that bandwidth is limited. Pirate stations often misuse this valuable bandwidth and it’s vital that the authorities do everything they can shut down these illegal operations. Such limitations don’t apply to Digital radio. If someone is so keen to have a “hobby” they can seek to establish a digital station.
This is another example of people choosing which laws they think they don’t need to adhere to.

I'm always surprised to hear that. Do we have a poor system in Ireland cos when go abroad be massive amount of stations...

I still think the awarding of licences in Irealnd is a scam as dunno why the state should tell statiosn what type of programmes to transmit, not that manay of them stick to their licence rules anyway. Also radio a bit like pub licences in that creates millionaires overnight.

Yes but is it not the case that the Government/ Regulators limit the number of licences so as to keep the price high? There is plenty of available bandwidth, if it was actually released. No reason at all that there need only be one radio station to cover an area - there could easily be two or three, without the ambulance arguement even coming into it.

In Dublin there is no need for there to be so many pop pap stations, whilst the likes of phantom keep on getting turned down. (Usually on the grounds of financial viability, when the only thing that makes them unviable is the (artificial) cost of the fookin licence).

Nationally there isn't enough choice either. TodayFM and 2FM playing the same stuff for the most part (comes down to the choice of DJ, not the choice of content). It would be great to see a national newstalk/5 live type national station. If I want talk radio, I have no choice but to listen to 5live as there is no Irish alternative (Can't quite get Newstalk where I live). Crap phone in's on Radio 1 (Pat Kenny, Joe Duffy etc) don't cut the mustard compared to "true" talk radio stations.

Agreed, TalkSport and FiveLive are what I listen to mostly over here.
Perhaps I'm being a bit naive but I'm hoping Digital Radio will open up a whole load of new stations. There seems to be a big push on here at the moment for DAB Digital Radio (http://www.digitalradionow.com/).
I'm sure Ireland will tag along behind in a few years.

the problem with the licences is that a station in longford for example has to do so much, deaths-sport-music-social comment.

where as in dublin they don't do that at all. i was talking to mike maloney and dave kelly on sat and they said the only station moving forward in dublin at the mo is newstalk, great station but limitied to a dublin audience, i'd love to hear them nationwide.

as you can see in dubllin spin 103.8 is a yellow pack fm 104, which is rather rather sad.

a radio station doesn't make you a millionaire over night as the licence is only for a specific amount of time, 10 years...look at what happened in kilkenny over the licence or in the north west for good examples of how it can all go belly up if you don't get your licence renewed.

radio in ireland is on its knees at the mo and the only hope is for news talk to go nationwide with a local shoe for different areas maybe twice a day with longford/roscomon news on and local sport at the weekends.

after that the stations with the current licences could focus on providing entertainment for the market.

the only problem is price of the units, you need one in your car and home and they are not cheap....

a decent head unit for a car is at least €400/500 these days and thats nothing special. if it was coupled with digital tv as a package then it might do something.

with broadband so available these days i'm surprised a lot of people aren't trying their own internet station. www.sun80s.com is a pirate in dublin yet most of its listeners are on line, all around the world and its just a station programmed on raduga.

But that was kinda what I was trying to get at, why restrict it to one licence per area. Let them compete.

Peader, Digital is definitely the way to go, but we're so far behind the UK it's ridiculous. We'll be lucky to have trialed DTT (Digital Terrestial Television) and DAB by the time 2012 (the UK's, albeit optomistic, analogue shutdown). RTE Radio are available digitally on satellite (FTA), but you can't get digital television without subscribing to Sky/NTL/Chorus.

IMO RTE should be forced to produce FTV cards, or an equivalent CAM/Card system so that the digital changeover can at least start. There would be a market considering the pathetic analogue coverage many areas have to suffer. I mean RTE haven't even managed to get all their transmitters over to UHF yet!!??!!

but ya can't just pick and choose the rules you want to follow, why not do an internet station.

and your bit of fun could interfere with emergency services, would it be a bit of fun then

Imagine the audacity of the authorities for thinking it was right to stop you from "having a bit of a crack"!

You'll get no sympathy here, mate.
Your and your friends idea of a "having a bit of a crack" may differ greatly from the thousands of people capable of picking up your broadcast.

This is the pirate radio equivalent of the "think of the children" arguement. Has there ever been a case of this, even before the radio market was more throughly regulated (and there were far more pirates than these days)?

yes i know a number of stations that changed frequency because of such a problem....if you are caught blocking a channels uch as that, my god your up the creek without a paddle.

the problem is whn people who know little about radio do this and don't realise the harm they could be causing.

in dublin there are a number of frequenices that are there for pirates, 92, 94, 99.1, 99.4, 106.4 are just a few but the fun starts when two people want the same freq and a war starts, that can be very very funny.

Ever actually asked a paramedic or a firefighter about that? It's rubbish put about by the people who control the airwaves so they can keep it that way.

As soon as I saw this thread I knew the law and order brigade would be out in force. Hi Peadar

na i've worked in pirate radio, but its the parasytes in dublin pirates i'm against, if you floow radio you'll know who i'm on about.....money is the only reason they are in it, not for the love of radio. that is a reason some are in it, but freq jamming has and does happen.

WAR, no one is claiming they are.
The simple fact is though, a law is a law.
It's not for us to decide which ones we think are good and abide only by those. The fact that analogue should be phased out within the next 20 years means however, that we're unlikely to see a change in the law.
