Interesting that McAteer's grandad was from Down...

And he played for us before the GFA. Hmmmmm... :)

I had a great laugh at the whole thing. It was brilliant radio.

was at it myself in the Mercantile, great stuff altogether. Well worth a listen back when they put it online

Few interesting points:
Kilbane never went to England training in Ireland gear, and doesn't know where the story comes from. He was called into the England u18 when at Preston, and had to tell Sam Allardyce (who was managing the Preston underage side) the next day that he didn't want to play for England
Similarly, McAteer was approached to play for England but waited a few days to make a decision, Jack Charlton saw him play in that time (think it was a cup game) and offered him to play for the Republic and he accepted immediately
McAteer said that when Brian Kerr dropped him from the squad, he didn't hear from him for ten days, given Kerr's recent comments about Trapattoni's communication with the players that's surprising

That's Barcelona lover Graham hunter on the right. :P

McAteer has such a bad rep as a thicko but he comes across as so quick-witted and funny on this.

It's class, I'm sickened I didn't hear about this during the week.

McAteer's Grandad was born before partition anyway so he'd have qualified regardless. Although we all know the GFA is irrelevant anyway ;)

It's only irrelevant if you're an informed soul.

It's only irrelevant if you're an informed soul.

Or if you're old enough to remember when players from NI started getting picked before the GFA, like some of us unfortunately are! :D

According to YBIG he claimed it was true (page 6)

http://www.ybig.ie/uploads/file/YBIG_iSSUE_19_web.pdf fair enough then, but that's what he said earlier

<EDIT>

I listened back to the broadcast
at 34:20 minutes, this is what is said
Ger Gilroy (presenter): Can you ask Kevin if it's true that he turned up at an England schoolboy trial in an Irish tracksuit?
Kevin Kilbane: No, no, no, no it's not true, no
GG: It's a good story that's been doing the rounds
KK: When I was 18 at Preston, Sam Allardyce was the youth team manager. I was called into England U18s. We'd won the league with Preston the night before, I think this story been said before, but we won the league with our youth team
He announced that one of his players had been called into the England u18 squad. So, I was looking around thinking who's this lad whose been called into the England squad and he just said it was me, I'd been called in
I remember that night I was bricking it! I've got to go and tell him I just don't want to play. I really don't want to play for England, I never felt as though I wanted to
Following morning I went to his office, I knocked on his door, sit down and he was like absolutely buzzing. I said look Sam, I don't wanna go, I really don't want to play for England I'm sorry
He stood up Sam, and, I mean, he's got a massive head at the best of times, he stands up Sam
and he was going to rip me, honestly he was just gonna kill me. He was gonna kill me. I thought he was just going to punch me there and then
Anyway, I walked out and that was it really

Interesting, thanks.
