View Full Version : Sean McCaffrey not talking to the press

This has been highlighted on MNS now a few times (including tonight) that the Dundalk manager Sean McCaffrey is refusing to give interviews after games. Eoin Hand had a swipe at him over it recently.

Does this matter, is he right or should all gaffers speak to the press after games?

In the grander scheme of things it probably doesn't really matter once he is saying the right things to the team but it does seem a little childish and unprofessional to me and that can come across to the players too.

Luckily, footballers tend to be quite mature and reflective so I doubt it will come across to the players.

I didn't notice, I just tuned in this week in particular to see the Bohs goal.

It bugged me I must say. Time to come out and back the players.

Am I the only one who was looking at that Bohs goal thinking "For the love of God, somebody do SOMETHING!!" rather than thinking twas fantastic??

From what I've seen of them (which admitedly is limited to the odd MNS) Dundalk look absolutely harmless.

Is he not talking to media or MNS? Does it matter? No. Is it important for the players? No. The media and fans figure they're the most important cogs in the sports machine so this sense of entitlement allows the media to "speak for" the people. Nonsense. There's so much going on in the club at the moment that if SMcC is concentrating on his team duties, let him.

Bit harsh.

We're mostly harmless :)

Sean McCaffrey had no problem talkin to the press when he got the dundalk job. he cant have it both ways if dundalk are struggling.. the dundalk public are looking for reassurance off him and when he doenst do that it only encourages unrest.. I have a feeling McCaffrey wont last the season with them..

its because everytime he opens his mouth he exposes himself further as a complete and utter spoofer.

Evel if things are not going right on the pitch a positive charasmatic manager can re-assure fans and keep the fans coming back, not talking to the media, the club loses contact with the part time fans which is not good. There are benefits so a strong relationship between Managers, clubs and the media.

Darius was sent out but MNS wanted McCaffrey.

Nobody wants to listen to his waffle anyway.

Spoofer.

Personally I wish the other managers would follow suit. Post-match interviews are rarely insightful and I'd prefer another minute or two of highlights tbh.

In fairness why should McCaffery or Dundalk give a fcuk about what MNS want.

Well its part of the FAI participation agreement. I've no problem with RTE refusing to speak to assistants either. "We asked to speak to manager but he refused" should be the standard line. And I thought the way BBC refused to do this to Ferguson for years was pathetic too.

Hernany Macedo, I think he can play as a centre and left back. There has been problems with his work visa. He is over here with some sports agency (can't think of the name) so the cost of him been here at the moment is minimal supposedly. McCaffrey says there is no better player in the league and he is a "Roll Royce" amongst other players in training

Turning attentions back to on field matters, McCaffrey has been handed a further headache after it was revealed that Brazilian defender Hernany’s application for a work permit was turned down recently. The club have launched an appeal but McCaffrey said it would be some time before the issue is resolved.
“It’s rumbling on”, he said. “His work permit has been turned down and we’ve had to appeal it. There’s not a chance that will be sorted out soon. In terms of the player, there is not a player in this league who is as good as Hernany. He looks like a Roll Royce amongst our players in training. He’s the best in everything we do and he’ll be a massive addition.

Don't know what the problem with his Work Permit is. Think thats spoofery too. The only thing a club needs to produce to get a work permit for a player is a contract showing he's being paid at least the minimum wage, and a letter from the FAI.

Nothing else.

Dodge, there's much more going on in Dundalk, I think we all know that. I think you're being harsh on McC, he's in a tough spot and I do believe he was sold a pup. But this Brazilian is a goer, just something's up in the state of Dundalk!

Who's waffle? McCaffrey or Darius? I always thought that McCaffrey was a spoofer to be honest. I would agree it seems to be a tough position he is in now but he could at least do interviews. Sean O'Connor lost 23 in a row and still did interviews. I just have no mass in him or Don Givens after their years of disaster at national level.

Not doubting the Brazilian is real. just pointing out its very simple (too simple IMO) to get a work permit for a sports professional. If you don't get one, its your own fault.

McCaffrey is 2 montsh into the job and already blaming the media and fans. Thats a horrendous sign

I much prefer Darius Kiernan to McCaffery I thought he did a good job at Drogheda United under tough circumstances and he seems to have a great knowledge of the game and the way in which football should be played, for me he would be a much better Dundalk manager than McCaffery but I dont know if he has the sufficient badges yet, does anyone know if he got them since his time at Drogheda?

I'm starting to think myself that Darius Kierans would have been a better choice. He has more LOI experience despite his age, would have better contacts with players and better cope on and know how required for the league. Also he would say stupid things like Rolls Royce players.

Whatever about the 1st team mess i thought McCaffrey would be able for the media. I will question again why the immediate criticism of McCaffrey for not speaking to MNS after the Rovers match and yet 2 weeks on the spin Roddy hasn't appeared, once covered by the extratime spoof and the other Trevor Molloy was wheeled out - not a mention or explaination...Con and the boys covering for their buddy? Fair point about Connor still spoofing after 23 losses on the spin but then he loved himself so much he couldnt pass up the chance to see his mug on tv.

*It seems that after the Derry match it was necessary to climb a gantry for an interview to be conducted, that wouldnt be possible for Sean McCaffrey to do due to his invalidity. Not being familiar with the camera set-up at the Brandywell i dunno if this is a plausible reason or not, but maybe worth consideration?

I was told this aswell. McCaffrey has difficulties with walking as he was in a bad car accident a few years back.

Was Roddy not sent off in the one Molloy spoke? Not allowed anywhere near the dressing rooms/pitch etc for 2 hours after the game.

He is just talking to MNS, he was interviews for the Cork match. Even though I think managers should try there best to give an interview, I think sometimes it's not the end of the world if they miss them. He missed two interviews. One was after the Rovers match where we got a 6-0 thumping, he probably should have said something but at the same time his team was humiliated. Then it seems at the Derry match he couldn't access the area where the camera's where located.
