Rivalry is great - but just because you want to beat Shels on a Saturday does not mean that you have to hope they get beat tonight.
I don't think the reason that SOME of the City fans wanted Shels to get hammered tonight was because we want to beat them on Saturday because what you say about there being things to our advantage if they lose but also if they win is true...However, I think the real reason SOME of the City fans
(aswell as fans from other EL clubs) wanted to see shels lose was because of the money they will get for progressing...They would surely dominate the league for years if thats the case and it would be unfair on the other teams!!!

how is it unfair to do well and be rewarded for it. they all more or less started on the same level. shels took a few chances and moved forward. cork aren't that far behind. I don't think you're just picking on shels I just reckon any team that made the step up first would get abuse for it.
shels arent going to dominate anything without 10,000 odd people in the stands ever week. if they do get into the group stages they will have to be ultra careful with their cash because there will be times they either don't win the league or get beat in qualifiers.
as a result they can't go and buy **** loads of players on expensive contacts as they have no guarantee of income.
all I see are a lot of jealous fans who wish it was their club getting close to the group stages.
i remember someone on this sit posting a few weeks back that it would be 20 years before an irish team made the group stages - it might be a few more but it wont be 20.

fair play shells. was thinking how bad a draw it was for shells when it seemed delighted drawing a big name.when you look at the other teams in 3rd round there are plenty they could have beat. although i wouldnt be shocked if they still go through. by frustrating them in front of home crowd - i can see it now going to penalties :D

Penalties would be the job but Depor would win them easily,Ireland verus Spain at World Cup 2002 brings back pain full memories. :(
Shels should frustrate the sh!te out of the balloxs and then grab the vital away goal with 10 minutes to go.
Ah.... if Carslberg only did CL Qualifiers.

Have to admit, last nights match made great TV. Perhaps it was just me
because there was an eL team was involved, but I haven't seem such
nailbiting stuff on TV since City played Waterford last season.
I think that I've come to realise that it's like watching England, you want to
see them lose so that there's an end to the smugness, but not just yet :D ,
much better if they get much further and then lose. Although with Shels
you can't win with that argument. England expect to win, Shels shouldn't
(if you go by the script) still be in it.
At least if they get through to the next round I'll get another few exciting nights of not wanting them to win (or, for that matter, lose).
At least they'll make a few bob and improve the flood defences at Tolka!

I'd take penalties now if ya offered em to me.50-50 chance of winning, pure luck(or lack of practice for the english national team :p ).
Once they don't get hammered 4 or 5 nil so the begrudgers and EL haters can say ''they were jammy to get that far''.

Would you support Spain against Ireland if there was a manager or a captain or a few players that ou disliked? It's the same story, you're basically supporting Spain against Ireland, your country, your people, your team. You're a small-minded, parochial idiot. I'll support Cork or Bohs or even Rovers to the World Club Cup final, and then still scream my head off for them to lose against Shels the next Friday. It's not about petty jealousies or made-up **** that you hate about rivals, this is supporting your countrymen, supporting Ireland on the World Stage. Putting local fueds ahead of it is sad and is what has Ireland and the EL in the state it is, though thankfully we're pulling ourselves out, no thanks to people like you.
sums it all up really...

That's what i was thinking too. Its good for the league and i love that they did well against a massive European team(i even enjoyed the match) but there is still that little cringe when they score. I think the only way to know for certain if i want them to win or not is to have a good few pints before watching the game(im always honest when im drink :D )

Hey, for all you begrudging City fans that wanted Shels to lose on Wednesday I have two things to say:
1. Go to Hell!!!
2. Dwell on this -with Shels doing well in Europe AND winning the Setanta Cup, all your parochial self centred fears will be realised. Shels will RULE !!!
As for the other broad minded Cork fans ( vast majority ), thanks for the support, I've always back CCFC in Europe and always will ( and every other eL club that qualifies ).

I was watching the match in germany with a dublin die hard man utd supporter. before the game I was saying that shels will hold their own and how they had performed so well against Split, and how city were more than a match for Nantes.........all i got back is the irish league is ****........after the match he was fairly impressed, but there was still the attitude of they'll get hammered the next day!! what really ****es me off is the constant moaning from him about a few stray passes, as if to say i told you they were **** ,eventhough you see it all the time in the premier**** as well!
For this reason I hope Shels at least hold their own if not win, it shuts these guys up and it shows that we have a league which we should support and be proud of!!
