View Full Version : Mervue (Away) 16-3-2012

They have given Harps a game, going down 4-3 away and lost narrowly at home to early pace setters Longford. But they have lost twice and conceded 5 in doing so. Despite this, there is a sense that the greater pressure will be on the visitors, Limerick, come Friday. It would be nice to go there and win comfortably, settle things down and build from it.
Will we have learned from the Waterford game, where it looks like a team who had conceded heavily prior to that match kept it tight and picked us off. Mervue may be similar to Waterford in that respect. Will we show the guile required to open them up and the confidence to put the match to bed, things our squad should be well able to do.
Predictions ?

We need to be going up there and getting maximum points and showing what we can do as we have been very unconvincing in our first two games. If we keep going the way we are people will stay well clear of Jackman Park.
I'd like to see us playing with a line up of:
Barry Ryan
Shaun Kelly
Pat Purcell
Shane Guthrie
Shane Tracey
Rory Gaffney
Stephen Bradley
Joe Gamble
Derek O Brien
Gary Sheehan
Dominic Foley
Subs:
Dave Ryan
Corie Tracey
Andrew Bhandarkar
David O'Leary
Stephen McGann
Denis Behan
Padraig Quinn
If any of those players are out I would like to see Anto O Donnell, Cian Collins or Barry Sheedy coming into the team.
Sadly I don't think there is a hope of that.
Prediction: Mervue 0-1 Limerick

I think it will be very disappointing if we don't get a good performance on Friday. They have had there wake up call now so should be taking nothing fro granted against Mervue who will be hard to beat.
I think we need a change in system as the one we are using now leaves Behan isolated way too much. Id like to see Dom Foley start up front with Behan and just go 442 cant see it happening though.
I think we will either scrape a 1-0 o it will be scoreless.

In fairness, you would say something if he was actually bringing him on. Against Longford Tracy was missing, then Kelly and Brosnan against Waterford so I think Alex Scully seemed to be just thrown on the bench because the u-19's had a game on Sunday and he didn't want to bring any of the starters.

Brosnan was missing against Waterfrod because Alex Scully was picked on the bench ahead of him. Steve McGann would be one of the best of not the best player in the 19s there was no problem with him playing against Waterford and missing the 19s game. If it was a case of not wanting players to play that had a 19s game the Sunday Scully would not be on the bench he was in the 19 squad on Sunday.
Alex Scully is the worst player at the club he has no business being at the club he is not good enough to be in the 19s squad nevermind the senior team....Its not anything against him or anything but id bet you would find it hard to get anyone to find someone worse then him with the 19s. Someone is missing out because of him and there is no excuse for it imo.

I would take a win of any kind just to settle things, 0-1 would do fine. It will be very interesting to see what happens if Mervue were to nick a lead after half an hour though.

lets face it if Mervue score first I think we are in trouble... we played for 20 minutes against Harps in the 1st half and were worse that sh**te in the 2nd. We were clueless and predictable against Waterford and the rigid system we play coupled with our centre backs hoofin long balls up the field doesn't help
p.s dont get me started on Davy Ryans goal kicks..........

Ya if we go a goal behind we look like we will panic which with the experience in the team is ridiculous.
Dempsey said it in his interview about the match, limerick basically made it very predictable with long throws and long balls which they could deal with easily.

Was at the game towards the end of last season, where a late goal settled it. Could be tight again but since Mervue have lost their first two games and are on a small budget I predict a Limerick win by 2-1. The size of the crowd will also be interesting.

Surely if you purchase good ball players such as bradley and gamble then the game needs to go through them? They cant do a whole lot if the ball is in air constantly,if we continue to play long ball it brings us to a level playing field with the rest.No in my opinion get the ball to these lads and eventually quality will shine through, need a win tomorrow lads simple as.

Ya we where shocking again tonight. We aren't playing any football at all and the players we have don't look like the quality players we know they are.
Glad of the three points but there again it won't attract anyone to jackman to watch us. Fair enough winning is all that matters but if we keep that level of performance up we'll lose a fair few games.
Dissapointed with Dom Foley, clearly fit and able to run so age not a factor but he was fairly anonymous.

Agree with this.
In fact, I don't even care how we play, as long as we do it effectively. But we were shocking tonight, we look like we have no plan at all for what to do with the ball. O'Brien was shocking, Foley was poor, but I thought Gamble did well tonight.

I dont think the fact the ball is being hoofed up the field helped him tonight the same way with Behan last week.
At stages i forgot that Mcgann was even playing he had no impact going forward and was being passed out way too easily when they came forward wouldn't have him starting ahead of O'Leary.
Gaffney was awful tonight imo.
Things really need to improve soon this is just not good enough.

Of course he did, he's hardly going to come out after a win and say "we were awful, really poor"
I blame the players more so than him, derek was terrible last night along with Rory, Andrew and Paudie. McGann tried hard, just didnt seem to work for him. I actually think his decisions have been better so far this year, taking off Gaffney for Tracy, Paudie for Denis and McGann for O'Leary.

I think it's easier to say we were poor after a win, lets people know we're not getting carried away with ourselves...
Results like these could be the ones we look back on where we played poorly but still won. And with the diet of Spanish football we've all been gobbling lately anybody will look poor in comparison.
3 games in, 6 points. Not too far off a target Scully might have set for the squad I'll wager.

Who said anything about coming out saying we were terrible? But hailing the last 2 performances as Excellent is a joke.....Very easy to just say we weren't at our best but happy with the win.
We have been crap in all 3 games so far except 1st half in Harps game.
I've backed Scully and i still wouldn't be asking for him out or anything as long as we are winning but having the players we have playing so poorly and with an awful style of play is not good enough.
Keep plating the way we did last week and lastnight and we wont keep winning for long got very lucky lastnight.
Dont care too much what he says on the radio but if he actually believes what he is saying it is very very worrying.

No one did, but the puzzled smilie you put after your comment suggested he shouldn't have said they played well. Anyway forget it...
i was behind the dugout last night, he kept telling them get the ball down. Give it to Foleys feet, he won an awful lot of ball in the air. I don't think it's fair that people are criticising Scully when some of the players look like they are lacking confidence. Like last night, Derek, Gaffney, Andrew, Corie, McGann & Paudie, all had poor games imo which i dont think tactics explain. Thats both flanks, one centre mid and one in the hole, so no wonder the ball went long so much. I think we're missing legs in the middle as well to link up the play. Id def go for Shane Tracy over Gaffney though after last night.
(...at least Alex wasnt on the bench though :P )

I don't think he should have said we player brilliantly because we were nowhere near playing well let alone brilliantly.
I think tactics can explain them 3 not being that involved its hard for them to be involved and almost impossible for Paudie to be when the ball is being hoofed over his head.
Andrew playing poorly cant be explained by tactics but then again he shouldn't be starting he is not good enough and being honest i don't think he ever will be.
The system is not working and that is Scullys fault. I was defending him after Harps thinking that things would get better with more games in the 2 games since then it has got worse.
The ball was going long from the start of the game so can't see how those players playing badly explains the ball going long being honest.

I agree with everything bluewhitearmy said above, I've seen Limerick twice this season and not impressed overall. Scully should stop with these mad tactics of 4-1-4-1 or whatever he thinks he's doing, he seems to be over complicating things then going all defensive and predictable. I too have been defending Scully as I think alot of fans go a bit OTT both on here and at the games but Scully is no tactical genius and should stop triing to be and just go 4-4-2 let the players do their stuff and stop making things so hard for us!

i would have put it at 275 with about half of that from Limerick. Great limerick crowds travelling to the away games to be fair. and yes we were muck. Stephen McGann being told to sit back when Gamble was allready sitting in front of the back four sums it up really.

Definitely staying focused on the positives there, but to be fair to him he did say there was improvement needed also, on a couple of occasions, and mentioned the need to keep it down and get it wide better and more often, I think. I haven't been to the games this season so can't comment on the quality of ball being played but I suppose better this way than having knocked it around in our own half and the middle third admirably but not collected any points. I would also say the quality of player in that dressing room will know better than anyone what standards need to be and can be, achieved, but I would hope with a few more wins, an improving league position that confidence will come, in particular to the younger local lads and we will hopefully see a better standard of passing emerge then.
