I see the FAI are out urging people to support Shels.
Fran Rooney, Chief Executive of the FAI, today called for Ireland fans to come out and support Shelbourne in tomorrow night’s crunch Champions League game against Hajduk Split.
Story here. (http://breakingnews.ie/2004/08/03/story159925.html)
Didn't see anyone out telling people to support City!?!
Not that we needed it.
Just shows you how sad a club Shels are that they have to get the FAI to ask people to support them in order for them to get a decent crowd.
I hope it's us in the Champions League next season so that we can show the Dubs how it's done.

There's a difference between saying "well done" and saying "Massive support would help create the atmosphere to put Shelbourne on the road to victory."
I wouldn't expect you to see beyond the Dublin bias though.

Cork Celtic you mean
Why do shel$ need help filling the ground? Fairly pathetic sign to send out to the greater public?
they should fill lansdowne road for this game let alone Tolka........

If our success is to count for anything Shels have to go through.
Imagine the mighty Deportivo coming to town?
Am I right in saying that if Bohs had got past Rosenborg last year they would have faced Depo as well?

Agreed Pete, I can't understand why an EL fan would want Shels to go out tonight, regardless of feeling towards Byrne ad Fenlon.
Bohs would have played Depor

What are the predictions for tonight so???
I'm guessing a draw, 1-1 or 2-2. Should be a decent game as Split have to score but see them just having enough to scrape through.

we don't want a rosenborg situation here in ireland do we, with one team totally dominating and winning the league year in - year out. since rosenborg had a bit of success in the champs league in the mid 90's and got some cash from it they've won the league every year since then. it would be bad for the eL if shelbourne totally dominate....they are already doing it this year!

That WILL NOT happen in Ireland!
If Shels became successful over night and progressed to the Champions League proper they'd be out after the first round like Rosenborg. They would then return to the league with a squad of restless players who think they're better than the eL. If they did manage to keep that squad together and repeated their success the following season investers would see the league as a gateway to great things and regional clubs like Cork City FC, Galway United, Derry City, Drogheda United and Longford Town would have people queueing up to pump money into them.
I think most of the money Rosenborg got was from selling players.

Nice dream but not likely to happen. Why would someone put money into Galway when Shels would be the biggest club??? Doesn't make sense. Only one team can win the league and qualify for Champs League. Rosenborg buy all the best players from the other teams in their league, sell them on to foreign teams and use the cash to buy a new lot of players in the league. If Shels did become successful in Europe they could sell on the likes of Hoolahan etc. to England for inflated prices and dominate the domestic market. It's very naive to say that couldn't happen here!! It's proven to have happened somewhere else....yes??

How many people do you think can actually invest in a single club?
How many people around the country despise Shels and would love to contribute to a club which could challenge them?
We've the best U21 squad in the country for the last 2 seasons running.
Our youth scheme will continue to produce good players.
Shels are not going to destroy that no matter how negative you are.
You'd want to stop reading fiction and stick to the facts.

These are the facts!!! Since HJK Helsinki qualified for the Champs League about 5 years ago...they have totally dominated the Finnish League (about the same standard as here, perhaps slightly better). Answer me if this is fiction why has it happened in at least 2 countries?? There is nothing better than seeing Irish teams do well in Europe but not at the expense of other clubs....do you not agree??? On the other hand if it was City who were in this position I wouldn't care less....maybe it's that I just hate Shels.

I've worked in both the countries that you've mentioned and sussed out the football there. It's a totally different setup than Ireland so it's not valid to compare. I would estimate that, as a nation, we produce more professional footballers per capita than any Scandanavian country. The greater percentage of ours go to Britain though. Also, since you mentioned domination, look at the English Premier League, Has the dominance of Manchester United destroyed the league? Or the dominance of Liverpool in the old First Division during the 80's? You could go back a few decades and say that Rovers dominated the League of Ireland. There are natural cycles in football where success breeds success but it doesn't mean that one club has raped the league of all that's good. I'd prefer to be in the situation we're in rather than one similar to the SPL.

simple truth of the matter is if shells got hammered tonight or even played poorly we CITY will lose potential supporters.because those at home watching it will say league of ireland is ****e.bohs and longford have ****ed up already but thank got there wasnt much exposure about it.
tonight its live around the country and lets all hope they do well.eventhough they have been worse than any of our representatives over the years.i think one victory in last 12 games.

You could argue it's happened in Switzerland too with Basle, but it hasn't happened in Greece for example or Sweden with IFK Gothenborg who had a few good years.
Finding it hard to support $hel$ too much given their usual attitude to the rest of the eL.
Don't really see how $hel$ winning will make more people come to the cross every 2nd week. Might bring more out for league game saturday week but can't see how would amke more people come out to Continuity Home Farm.

Im really looking forward to the shels game ,im glad its on tv .It would be fantastic if they went through.
What a load a sh*te.I could not care less about Shels and how they do.Last year one of there players physically asaulted our manager on the touchline(Mr Heary i am talking about you)and this year water baloons were thrown out of the stand at our manager. They travel to Turners X once or twice a season and act like they are untouchable. There chairman blows a fuse if any decision goes against them. They have be trying to borrow everyone elses supporters for tonights game and they talk about this possible victory as the great breakthrough to there dominance of our league for years. They will come down here Saturday week and try and bully Cork City FC as always. It will be a cold day in h*ll before i support Pat Fenlon and any of that lot.I am a City fan so why should i?.I would support any team from Derry down to Cobh and from Galway to St Pats but not $hels...
Come on City....

Well said RedX. Couldnt agree more.
The only reason I'd want them cheating shower of ****s winning tonight is because it might distract them for another couple of weeks and let City and Drogs catch them in the League.
Fúck Fenlon. Fúck Ollie Byrne. Fúck their car load of supporters.
Shels have gone ahead with 12 min to go.
At this point I couldn't care less about the co-efficient - if Shels go through they will rake in the cash and be able to buy the league for the next couple of years... :(

Brilliant result for the league.
I am a Bray fan but I still hopped around like a mad yoke on the final whistle becaus IMOAL thats a fantastic result for EL football- especially the 2nd goal which showed the improved fitness levels and allso should stop any of Split's players/staff etc.etc calling it a fluke. :)

As much as I dislike Shels, I envy them on their achievement tonight. It has now overshadowed City's run in Europe and I suppose the CL IS bigger than the intertoto. I really hope Shels don't dominate the league for 10 years as I think it will damage the league more than help. Its a real possibility too. I am a biassed and envious City fan. Sue me!!
2nd place or the title is a must for City now as we must qualify for this All Ireland cup looking at the money involved. We have to keep up with Shels on the money stakes. Good luck to all at City in this business open day too. Vital.

Neil and RedX, u have to realise that most of the people in Ireland don't even realise the "league of ireland" exists. The match tonight was live on our national broadcaster and if showed an irish club team DOMINATE the champions of Croatia.
This is good for the league. Maybe people will change their perceptions of the league. Before tonight the perception was that the league was a "mac-e-ah"! league.
The league has to have a less self-interested stance and a more of a holistic view of our teams in Europe.

No matter what anti-Shels sentiment there is out there, you would have to have a stone age view of things not to be delighted for Irish football tonight. By the way, what odds on the City -v- Shels match being postponed?
It's not "stone-age" or "begrudging" to not want $h£l$ to get through. That club has done NOTHING for this league over the years except cause it hassle and grief. On the one hand I'm happy to see an Irish, (well really Little Britain), side do well, but they are also rivals to our club and we don't want to fall any further behnd them. Lets be honest, this could mean total domination of the league by the one club which doesn't give a f*ck about the league.
On a more positive note, I hope the upcoming business initiative can use the result to our advantage. If enough businesses in Cork can be convinced that with investment, City could be very soon be in the 3rd round, with all the attendant publicity, they might feel City are a worthwhile investment. We need serious money coming into the club now to have any hope of catching up with $h£l$.
As for Oily, its hard to like that cnut, but between himself and Dolan last night, they gave the impression of a united front for the league, which can only improve things, given the endless negativity usually associated with Irish soccer.
It was hard not to spot the complete dislike Dolan has for Collins though....;)

Brilliant result last night and it really compliments the success of Cork City FC because people can now see that the league can compete in Europe rather than it just being a run of good luck for City against weak teams.
We love to begrudge others in Ireland.
What we should be doing is everything in our power to ensure that we emmulate the success of Shels next year. Well done Shels.
Went to lasts nights game, highly entertaining and congrats to Shels. Great to see so many supporters from other EL clubs in attendance. I hate Shels as much as any City fan, but the result can only be positive for the EL, it raises its profile and will encourage more people to go along and support their local club rather than follow Birts on Sky. It is crucial that City finish top two this season, it could be us in this position next season. Roll on Friday night.

I don't dislike any Irish team because I haven't any real experience, so no reasons to dislike any Irish team.
Although I can understand the ones who don't want Shelbourne to win, in Holland the situation is similar, I've got an opinion about every Dutch team, some I envy succes in Europe, some not.
However, remember this is good for for Irish football in general, the experience and the UEFA-coefficients-list (spelling?).
