Sin Nombre

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Sin-nombre-film.jpg

Willy, nicknamed El Casper (Edgar Flores), is a member of the Mara Salvatrucha gang and lives in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico. He introduces a young boy (Kristyan Ferrer) into his gang, and the boy is given the nickname Smiley after a violent initiation. Casper later helps Smiley to complete this initiation by helping him to execute a rival gang-member. Casper is romantically involved with a girl, Martha Marlen. Fearing for the girl's safety, he keeps the relationship a secret from his gang, but his double life causes his gang to doubt his loyalty.

Enjoyed this film, unfortunate that this is probably based on very realistic stuff going on in South America with gangs.

Saw this movie when it came out. It is stunning. Only thought about it there the other day. Needs another look.

A retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later.

It's very very funny as well in some parts. WATCH IT!

I have quite a collection of World Cinema and largely from the small screen.

A few that spring to mind. I have a fascination with communism but not as a sympathiser.

This one tickles me still. East of Bucharest.

Heading for 30 years old now but still my favourite. Come and See (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1036052-come_and_see/) (USSR 1985)

A classic, bit disturbing, but a must watch

The trailer alone for 'Come and See' is quite haunting. Might give it a watch tonight after the Euros final.

Anyone familiar with Michael Haneke's films? All quite disturbing and psychologically-challenging, but certainly worth watching.

I see Haneke's 'The White Ribbon' is on BBC iPlayer at the minute: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01qw7fq/The_White_Ribbon/

Would definitely recommend it for those of you with access.

Edit: And I did end up watching 'Come and See' that time. Christ; that scene involving the barn is distressing.

I found "The Lives of Others" pretty good. German with subtitles, about the Stasi.

Myself and my girlfriend attempted to watch 'Taegukgi' the other evening but she demanded we turn it off after about an hour and a half, such was the extremity of the violence in setting the tone of war. Unfortunately, that point was just as I thought the narrative was beginning to get beyond "these are the horrors of war" territory and move into a more interesting realm by exploring the increasingly-strained relationship between the film's two main protagonists; a pair of brothers, one of whom has joined the South Korean war effort in order to ensure that his younger brother will make it home to their family alive. I'll have to watch the remainder on my lonesome at some point; boo hoo...

Two other South Korean films I've seen are 'The Host (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Host_(2006_film))' and 'Oldboy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldboy)'. Both pretty good.

I thought Oldboy was really weird. Okay, I was very sleep deprived when I watched it, but what a bizarre premise!

The housemates went crazy over "Y Tu Mama Tambien". I can't comment, didn't see it, but they said it's brill!

Might give it a go some day.

Been a few years since I've seen it, but definitely thought positively of it. Another film starring Gael García Bernal worth watching is Bad Education (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Education_(film)); a Spanish exploration of clerical abuse, amongst other themes.

Watched La Haine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Haine) again the other evening. It's one of my favourite films of all time. It's about a day in the life of three alienated ethnic-minority youths from a Parisien banlieue. Vincent Cassell is fantastic in it. Comparisons have been made with the later Brazilian film, Cidade de Deus/City of God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_God_(2002_film)), although, personally, I'd still favour La Haine. Cidade de Deus is still a great movie, mind, with a look at the life of drugs and crime for which many are destined in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

Def agree with Le Haine - brill music, great scenes and dialogue and excellent acting - a MUST watch

Saw the movie "Metro" tonight. For a Russian flick it has good special effects, pretty realistic and the concept is quite scary (for someone who is daily in the underground. The acting is mostly crap, the story is a straight line, but it has some fun moments. I think it'll get a run somewhere in Ireland and the UK as the producer said he wants to test the overseas market. The only sticking point (for me as everyone I was with tonight didn't think of it) was that the station it was set at was the scene of a genuinely terrible incident in 2010 when suicide bombers killed and maims hundreds.

Excellent movie, think Vincent Cassel is a great actor.

He really is. L'Appartement was the first movie in which I'd encountered him. He's also very good in Sheitan. Have been meaning to watch Irréversible for a while now; one of his more contentious ones.

The soundtrack to Irreversible is stonking.

I downloaded the movie years ago but can't bring myself to watch it.

Very good film, but you need a strong disposition to watch the lynchpin scene with Monica Bellucci. (Trying to avoid spoiling it for anyone who hasn't seen it.) It makes you really appreciate just how good some actors are, and how much they are willing to go through to lift a script off the page.

I watched Irreversible a good while ago, it did nothing for me, as in, I wasn't the least interested in what it had to offer.

On Vincent Cassel, he is brilliant in Mesrine. He carries the role befitting one of the greatest screen actors.
Unfortunately for such a brilliant actor he doesn't get the roles befitting of his talent, though I haven't seen Black Swan.
Another favourite of mine is Daniel Auteuil.
Has anybody seen Cache (Hidden), directed by Michael Haneke? I've seen it 3 times and I still haven't worked out all the questions, never mind answers.
French film starts with Cache. I just love talking about this film with other people who have seen it.

Irreversible - fascinating film, I admire the craft a lot more than I admire the content.

Anyone seen Martyrs? One for the extreme horror/intense experience acolytes - it's pretty horrific, opinion was split amongst those I watched it with whether it was worthwhile or a pointless exploitation.

I watched it again as it was on some tv channel recently, it's even better 2nd time.
Sometimes it's funny what you remember from a film you've seen in the past and then be faced with memory versus the reality.
I thought it had a more complicated plot than it actually was, instead it's a wonderfully crafted story, beautifully filmed.
It certainly is a classic.

Haneke is a great film-maker. I've seen Cache, but it must have been about six or seven years ago now; could do with giving it another watch to refresh the memory.

Caché is good , very good lead performance and contains one of the most shocking moments I've seen in film in quite a while.
