Apparently West Ham are after this lad, a cousin of Rio and Anton Ferdinand. Wikipedia says he has an Irish father and he is already played for us at Under-18 level. Still only 19 as well - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kane_Ferdinand

Southend fans don't seem to rate him at all though, seems odd considering that he's a defensive midfielder (apparently converted from a centre back) even though he has scored 6 goals this season. Perhaps he is in the Lucas mould, i.e. the kind of player who you don't miss until you lose? - http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/showthread.php?69870-West-Ham-maintain-interest-in-Ferdinand&highlight=kane+ferdinand

Will be interesting to keep an eye on him, let's just hope he doesn't become the next Owen Garvan!

I'm sure we have a thread on him buried deep in the bowels of Foot.

Is he not going by McGovern now, or was that just UEFA screwing things up?

Yeah, he seemed to be going by Kane Ferdinand McGovern and Kane McGovern during the U-19 Euro's. Obviously McGovern must be his Irish father's name, not sure why it had to be used by UEFA.

I read an article recently (and in fairness, it's probably in that other thread) in which Kane stated he's never actually met his cousins Rio and Anton. Not sure has he had the privilege of meeting Les though! It's quite funny how he's then constantly referred to as Rio's cousin by the media. It must get a bit tedious for him.

Those fans seem quite judgemental at the beginning but in the last page of the thread a few posters admit that league two is perhaps too physical for him to make his mark on it and that it's too difficult for a 19 year-old to control games from the middle of the field. Valid points.

I'd say it probably says McGovern on his passport, which is why UEFA have used it.

But lets face it, if you're a young footballer making your way in the game and trying to get noticed, if sticking your mums surname on the back of your shirt gets you mentioned in the same sentence as the captain of England it's probably worth doing.

Just scored live on Sky, ball in over the top puts David Martin in behind the Gillingham defence down the left, took a bit long but ultimately squares it for Ferdinand who bundles it in the goal from a yard or two out.

EDIT: Now been given as an own goal

EDIT2: Given man of the match, was a pretty dire game but he worked hard throughout. Michael Timlin played for Southend too, didn't do much wrong.

Ferdinand was recalled to the squad for the match against promotion rivals Cheltenham and scored once in their 4-0 win.

Got himself a move to the Championship, will be interesting to see if he continues to make progress. Still only 19 as well.

Ferdinand did alright tonight from what I saw (came on after roughly an hour). Peterborough were woeful on the night, but he did OK on the right when he was able to get the ball and assisted on their only goal.
