February:
Giovanni Trappattoni announces a 22-man squad for the coming friendly with the Czechs at Lansdowne. Steven Reid rather than Andy, wins a surprise recall. Following the subsequent 0-0 draw, Brady tells us to put the result in perspective on RTE, Dunphy says we are not good enough to beat Euro 2012 teams.
March:
Delirious fans get the "Thank You" email from UEFA in the FAI ballot. Controversy rages however, when Paddy from Athlone calls Joe Duffy to boast that he got 3 tickets, and Mickey from Roscommon calls Joe to complain that he only got 1 ticket from the 2 he ordered. Alan Hunter of the "Irish Football Supporters Association" is put on air to whinge that the system is ludicrous, and calls for John Delaney to resign.
May:
Trap names his provisional squad for Euro 2012. Stephen Ireland is disgusted to not get a callup, as he needs to go to the finals, to try and get another club move. Brady says that players are picked over 2 years, Dunphy complains why the "class player" above is snubbed, in favour of Glen Whelan and Keith Andrews.
Ireland subsequently lose 0-1 to Poland in a pre-tournament training camp. Brady tells the nation not to panic, Dunphy tells us we shouldn't be at the finals.
June:
Ireland and Croatia replay the 0-0 friendly of a few months before. Fans are so excited, that they can queue for another round of drinks halfway through the second half without having to glance back at the "action". Brady says it's not a bad result, Dunphy fires 3 pens across the studio, and says Brady is a disgrace for assisting Trap's appointment. A similiar result against Spain is rather miraculous, given the fact that Spain walked through the Irish midfield for 90 minutes. Richard Dunne tears a hamstring strain blocking all the shots raining down on our goal. Brady celebrates the result, Dunphy dismisses it as a fluke.
A 2-1 win over Italy is celebrated by everyone except Trap himself. He knocks Italy out and is "emotional" again on RTE. Ireland make the quarter finals where we lose to France on penalties. Brady praises the team that were unbeaten during the competition. Dunphy forensically goes through each players faults upon going out. The players however, return to a heroes welcome stage at the Phoenix Park.
July:
Due to "unforeseen circumstances", the venue of our game in Kazachstan is switched to Almaty. Alan Hunter of the "Irish Football Supporters Association" rants at Joe Duffy on how Delaney could possibly agree to the switch at such short notice, setting fans back another 1k in the "current econmic climate".
September:
Ireland scramble a 1-0 away win in Kazachstan, Brady is content with the result in strange conditions, Dunphy whinges why we didn't win 5-0 at the bottom seeds. All accept the result sets us up nicely for the visit of the Germans next month.
October:
Ireland are comprehensively outplayed by Germany on our own patch. It's the last straw for the anti-Trap mob. The team is booed off the pitch, Dunphy weeps in the studio. Brady reminds us that Germany are top class, and will probably go on to win the group. Bucking the air of gloom however is John Delaney, who smiles at every camera around, laughing and joking at sour-looking journalists, revelling in the "sold out" signs, and telling them how much money the game has raised for the future of Irish football.
A scrappy win in the fog of Torshavn does little to lift the national mood. Dunphy rams it home, by telling BOH in the studio, that "we won't qualify". Alan Hunter of the "Irish Football Supporters Association" rings 1850 715 815 again to demand that Trap should now be fired, and when replacements are asked of him, recommends John Aldridge as new Ireland coach. Listenership figures "moderate" during the rest of the show.
November:
Considerably less people than last month, see a workmanlike 1-0 win at home to Finland. Dunphy says the result doesn't matter, Brady says it's an encouraging result ahead of the trip to Sweden.
December:
Despite the summer's adventures in Poland and Ukraine, the Kilkenny hurling coach wins the Irish Times Manager Of The Year. He later goes on to win the RTE Sports Personality Of The Year. Trappattoni doesn't earn so much as a nomination.
Never mind though, we're all off to Stockholm.....
