Eric has decided to enter the French presidential race by writing an open letter (http://www.thejournal.ie/eric-cantona-seeking-nomination-to-run-for-president-of-france-324288-Jan2012/) to the socialist paper Libération, in which he expresses concern for those worst affected by the recession. This isn't his first political venture, having last year called for a run on the banks that spectacularly flopped, and to get on the ballot paper, he requires the support of 500 local mayors. The French political system gives little opportunity to independents, and it's hard to see his support reaching any significant level, but he would at least add colour to what looked like becoming a rather bland presidential election.
