John Coleman was boss at Accrington Stanley while Long was there. He's taken over at Rochdale. Eddie Howe stated it was his intention to loan long to a League One side, obviously Long and Coleman had a strong working relationship.

Seriously, some League of Ireland teams should be capitalising on these loan signings. Are Crawley, Bournemouth, Colchester and the likes any better than signing for the likes of Bohs, Dundalk, the two Rovers and Cork?

Well Crawley are in the last 16 of the FA Cup, but I think there are more considerations than just the level the club is playing at. A lot of loans are between managers who know and trust each other, or involving clubs where the manager knows the player will be taken care of. Plus, I think international loans need to be fixed term, whereas loans within England mean the player can usually be recalled in an emergency.

Birmingham City sign Ramage, Folan & Hughton

Birmingham City have signed QPR defender Peter Ramage on loan and free agents Caleb Folan and Cian Hughton - all until the end of the season.

Republic of Ireland striker Folan, 29, left United States side Colorado Rapids earlier this month.

Defender Hughton, the 23-year-old son of Blues boss Chris, had been without a club since leaving Lincoln last summer.
The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international will mainly work with the club's development squad.

He will be eligible for the Championship play-offs if necessary, as will Folan and Hughton.

Folan played for Rushden & Diamonds, Hull, Chesterfield, Wigan and Middlesbrough in England before his season in Major League Soccer.
