Speaking of long waits, (not to be confused with 'Tom Waits', as is occasionally the practice when it comes to this guy) Mark Lanegan hasn't released a solo album since 2004 but that'l matter little come next month and the arrival of 'Blues Funeral'.

Agree, went to complete toss after Antics...they went from one of my favourite bands to one I now loath. They thought their fans would swallow any tripe. An archetype of success getting to a band :(

Unfortunately their fans (me included) did. To the point that I travelled to Edinburgh to see them last year. Actually in Nov 2010.

I saw them three times and each time they did little more than go through the motions. Coupling that with two bad albums, I have totally lost interest in them. A bad album is forgivable, but the nature of the third - songs about potentially having taken too much coke to sh@g a groupie, threesomes and dating actresses - completely turned me off.

That said, it doesn't undo the fact that The Specialist is one of my favourite songs and TOTBL is one of my favourite albums in the last ten years.

Yeah I remember everyone raving about the Oxegen 2004 gig. Really built up my expectations and probably contributed to the sense of dissapointment at what I experienced ( RDS and Oxegen twice - left the second halfway through). From OLTA, I'd proabably listen to Pace is the Trick and Pioneer to the Falls but there's far too much tat on it. Didn't give Julian Plenti a chance, I was apathetic by then and would prefer to save my listening time for artists who warrant it. Really feel they've only themselves to blame for their demise.

Eh... so today I decided to listen to Apocalypso by The Presets for the first time in what seems like years. And then I thought to myself that "Surely they are due a new album", and lo and behold it's released in Britain tomorrow... which means it was released here on Friday...

I don't know any of the above but it has been a great month for new releases IMO.
New Grizzly Bear album is fookin brill; XX album is very nice (if a bit samey); Animal Collective album seems good to but yet to totally get into it. Haven't heard the new one from Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffitti but it's out there and reviews are good.

Carlos D has been a loss indeed, but the fact is he didn't even write the basslines himself- it was Daniel Kessler, the guitarist.

Antics and TOTBL are bona fide classics. TOTBL is superior, but Antics is still a quality bit of work, even though it lacks TOTBL's subtlety. That said, Our Love to Admire and the S/T album do have their moments. The Heinrick Maneuver and Mammoth are two worthy tracks, as are Lights and Barricade.

I think they've tried to do too much. Things were simpler on the first two albums when they wrote quality songs with broody atmospheres that were easily and capably evoked by Kessler's guitar and Paul Banks voice. The two subsequent albums were a bit forced, especially Interpol, the last one.

Are you sure there is an Interpol album on the cards? I thought they were on hiatus.

Titus Andronicus' album is the next one I'm awaiting. Can't imagine it beating Passion Pit or Purity Ring in my list for the year, though it could send Bloc Party down a peg. I was abroad for the summer so I'm sure there albums I've missed that I must catch up on too.
