My other half alerted me to this earlier (she works with media sources) and I had to shake myself to realise that it wasn't a set up. We've a newly turned 2 year old and I know how a little kid can just dash or wander in the blink of an eye, but it's just the callousness of the people in the video that I just don't get. I know that here in Russia life can be cheap, you only have to look at the infamous vehicular homicide video from Irkutsk to see how corrupt and sick the society is. But a little child? I just don't understand it.

Having lived in China for a few years can say that this is infact normal behaviour for the Chinese. Maybe its got to do with the Mao years or the dog eat dog society they have or whatever but they will rarely help anyone on the side of a street or in distress. Its not that Chinese people are not friendly (they are extremely friendly people) but something like this is very common, any Chinese person will tell you this. Not a nice start to the day!

Jesus Bennocelt, I just can't understand it. I thought it was bad here in Russia, but I don't know if they'd ever get to this level. I'd always thought Chinese people were very close knit and looked after one another, but I can get where you're coming from at the same time. Just very, very sad.

They are close when it comes to families, but not as a community or group. I think it might be down to the Mao years where everyone or anyone could be working for the police, so in the end keep head down and dont trust or talk to anyone. The effects of communism sometimes has to be seen to be believed. What the catholic church has done to the Irish is nothing compared top how communism messed up the Chinese. Also having a huge population can affect people as well. it really does feel like a rat race in China.
As I said, the Chinese essentially are one of the friendliest people you can meet.
Id gather it might be the same then in Russia?

I heard about this briefly on the Last Word today.
I don't think I've ever witnessed anything like it in my life.
I don't think there are words. I think I'll be haunted by that for a long time to come.
Almost physically sick.

No way am I watching that video, I heard what it is and sometimes I usually watch videos I know will distress me, but this involves a child so can't watch it. What a horrible world we live in sometimes:(

As horrible as that is, I don't think it's just a issue for China.
Example of similar in US:

I can't stomach such videos when kids are involved so didn't watch it, but I personally don't see it as just a Chinese issue, stuff like that can happen anywhere!

Can't watch that, sorry Horton. I just cannot understand how people can be so blatantly uncaring. You know, my heart lifted in Russia a few years ago when a "model" was jailed for killing a stray dog. Now anyone who's been here will know that stray dogs are not uncommon, but when a scumbag bea one to death with her shoe, she was arrested and jailed. And the local traders and staff erected a statue to the dog. In saying that, normally traders and those working in the metro or cleaners, are at the lower rungs of the society ladder here, and I've seen such goodness from people like this to animals and people. So there is hope.
