Searched in case he was mentioned elsewhere but there was an interview with him in last Sundays Indo (http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/smiths-bolt-from-the-blue-2873096.html)

I know most Ireland U19's don't get a thread of their own but there is a novelty value to this lads situation I suppose. Seems to be seen as quite a prospect as well. Pretty level headed kid too.

It was a very interesting article that. Smith makes La Masia sound like a carpark in Saipan by the way he speaks about the atmoshpere around the Rangers training ground. Out of all the clubs that he spent time with on trial, he felt that Rangers would be the best place to learn his trade, which is as good a reason as any to join a club.

Best of luck to him!

I'm not a fan of his commentating in the FIFA 12 demo...

I'm still amazed he got 19 caps for England, probably just because he joined Man Utd from Leeds...

In fairness that's not a bad article considering the publication.

Was thinking the exact same myself. Good luck to the lad. The more Irish lads making the big time the better.

I wonder if his Polish housemate knows exactly what the Rangers fans think about Karol Wojtyła....
I'm all for saying fair play to the lad and I wish the religious divide wasn't there but....

I was most surprised to learn Rangers had a Dublin scout, and seemingly have had for many years.

Me too, you would wonder what justified his wage up to this point. Or maybe he has reccomended countless Irish lads who went on to make it but would not go near Rangers.

That's what I was thinking - even Smith went to Celtic as well as Rangers. You'd think the success rate would be ludicrously small.

What do you mean "Oh here we go"

I meant someone looking to get offended and turn a thread OT.

You referred to a former Pope as "an effing C" - fairly obvious what the C meant so dont try and twist it.

You're absolutely right - I called him an effing C, it is indeed obvious what the C means and I stand over it. So -what am I trying to twist?

Your post (or that part) had no relevance to what was being discussed and was in fairly poor taste in my opinion.

You're the one who derailed the topic with that comment.
No I didn't -Yard of Pace posted a comment that was slightly, but scarcely criminally, OT. I offered a counterpoint. You then took the hump.

Dont get me wrong I'm far from a Bible basher or an RC adherent, I just thought that comment was uncalled for - my opinion so we'll leave it at that
It's a big boys forum. My language may be unparliamentary but I stand over the sentiment entirely. But like yourself and in keeping with my previous post I too am happy to leave it at that.

Wow. I return to this thread after a couple of days absence to find billowing smoke, sirens ringing and ambulances everywhere.

Let me guess: Stephen Ireland?? , NI Eligibility?? David Connolly should start???

Close. David Connolly has announced his desire to play for Northern Ireland following the acrimonious break up of his affair with Stephen Ireland's granny.

There really aren't any winners here.

Think I preferred him when he played for Leeds... That particular gowl is a true blue Rangers supporter. Was so impressed by Hately and co. back in '92 that he's followed them loyally (no puns) since. Made a career of being a switcher. They're welcome to him now and forever more.

Just wondering does anyone know how this lads future is working out seeing as the 'Gers are going completely tits up.

Will they even have an underage setup in the Scottish inter-pub Sunday league?

It's entirely possible that he will be promoted to the first team if Rangers continue to lose their senior players.

Id say rangers u18's would walk the scottish div 3 or whatever league they end up in anyway

Rangers sign a southern Irishman and the club implodes. Coincidence......? :D

Lionel Ritchie

After some snooping about ...He seems to have kept his place as their first choice in the underage setup and one of his main counterparts is going out on loan to Accie next season according to rangers.co.uk (soon to be replaced by http://www.geocities.com/rangers)

Neil Alexander has said he'll be staying though so the lad's still got a decent keeper to contend with.

McCoist says S.F.L.3 may be on the cards and that he has about six players at present. If that were to happen our lad would be better off out of there surely. He would be early twenties by the time they resurface even with consecutive promotions. Cant see them putting him in the team at that level either, I'd imagine S.F.L.3 wouldn't be short of rough and tumble.

Being the keeper that got them successive promotions back to the big time could be the making of the lad though.

While I appreciate it's a joke, geocities closed in 2009 (except in Japan for some reason).

Not to be sneezed at ...small clubs like Rangers need these friendlies against bigger sides with proven pedigree from across the water. All helps pay a few bill(y)s.

Did he come on as a sub as an outfield player or did skysports make a mistake? It says he came on for Kyle Hutton who was playing in defence in the 81st minute.
