22 year old defensive midfielder with 30 appearances for Hannover 96. Schmiedebach grew up bilingual, speaking German and Spanish. His mother is Colombian-Venezuelan and came to Berlin over two decades ago. His father Helmuth has Irish roots while his grandfather is Moroccan.

Any FAI staff around to look into this?

Irish roots could be a log way back. Unless his Grandad was a brickie in the 80's, seems unlikely though.

His father Helmuth has Irish roots
What does this mean? Did Jacinta from Ballybock dye Helmut's hair?

More importantly how did he come across this.
Did you type "irish roots" in google<insert_language_here> translator and then use it in google.<insert_postfix_countries_address_here>

Send them off an e-mail (info@fai.ie). I e-mailed them about a chap called Thomas Delaney playing for Copenhagen and got a response. Transpired his Irish roots were quite a few generations back and had taken a detour via the US before ending up in Denmark though.

Amusing translation of a Bild.de piece on him (http://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/manuel-schmiedebach/hannovers-juwel-faehrt-mit-dem-bus-17103306.bild.html):
He is the whiz kid in the whiz: Manuel Schmiedebach (22) is the man in Hanover's midfielder headquarters is located at No. 3 with 96 - Course Champions League.
Schmiedebach? The Berlin (example: Zidane) has won since 2008 in Hannover, under coach Mirko Slomka a regular place. Slomka says: "Manu is driven workflows incredibly strong, stubborn, cheeky, strong in the tackle."
A crazy guy! Schmiedebach catch a bus or train to train, because he has no driver's license. Manu grin: "I've even started, just had to take the examination. But I was too lazy to speak up. "
He dreams of playing for Germany, but he grew up bilingual (Spanish / German): Mama Betty's Columbian came to Berlin 25 years ago. Papa Heinz has Irish ancestors, the grandpa is Moroccan.
Dreams of playing for Germany, apparently.

"My mother is Colombian. She emigrated with my grandmother as a child in Venezuela. My grandpa is Moroccan with Portuguese ancestry. My dad is German, with Irish ancestry."

"Irish ancestry" rather than "an Irish parent" would suggest it may well be a few generations back.

I would have been more optimistic if his name was Manuel O'Schmiedebach

How the hell do you find info on his roots.

A couple of years ago both his goalkeeper and captain committed suicide shortly after he started playing!!

Who was his captain? I'm guessing the keeper was Robert Enke. Or was Enke both captain and keeper?

It seems he was both keeper and captain.

"In a difficult season due to the suicide of the team's goalkeeper and captain Robert Enke", I misunderstood it, although maybe it is open to interpretation, I guess there would need to be a comma after goalkeeper for it to be two separate people.

Completed 90 minutes tonight for Hanover. Anyone find out if he was eligible or is he another Franck Queudrue?

Google tells me this is his Twitter profile: https://twitter.com/MSchmiedebach33
But Twitter tells me the page doesn't exist.
Edit: Here's another profile: https://twitter.com/SchmiedebachH96
His official one, apparently, although he doesn't appear to put it to much use.

He's with Curtis Davies. He heard things about Roy's hygiene and would rather play for Sierra Leone. Germans had a foot hold in Africa for awhile, if you saw "The English Patient" so its not impossible.
Quick trivia, and don't look it up: What country is the English Patient actually from?
