1) Estonia must be up there? Three wins now. Spread my bets by nominating Malta (Pat's v Valletta, Sligo v Floriana, Dundalk v Hibs, Waterford too I think?).
2) Luxembourg?
3) UCD v Everton anyway (1984/85 CWC). Did some German side beat Cork or Sligo in the InterToto? The others would presumably be a fair few years ago. Did Bayern win after scraping Rovers in 66? Also, is there a similar question to be asked about the clubs Irish sides have met who were reigning holders?
4) Are we talking about winning a tie? Something like 1989/90 up to Shels' win against Sloga Jugomagnat in 2000 was the longest without winning a tie I think. There were a couple of individual wins (Derry v that Bulgarian crowd); maybe three years without winning a single game?
5) a) Drumcondra b) ? c) ? d) ? e) Shels? f) Sligo? g) Dundalk last year (v Grevenmacher)
6) a) ? b) Bohs (lost to a Baltic team?)
7) Rovers, Pat's and Dundalk (?) all on 7
8) Rovers?
9) Fingal and Galway
10) 48 or 49 I think?

1) Nope
2) Nope
3) UCD v Everton is one
4) yes, I meant ties. Shels beat the Macedonians was in 2000, before that was Sligo beating Floriana in 93. We've had longer...
5) Shels in the Champions league is the only correct answer
6) Bohs is right (lost to FK Riga)
7) Pats is one of them. other 2 wrong
8) Rovers is wrong
9) Yeah, spot on
10) Nope

5a is Rovers then presumably. Drums first in the Fairs Cup? I'll chance Waterford as the first for the CWC, and then stop making semi-random guesses and let someone else have a go. :)

Was it Cork the first team in the InterToto then? Think there was only a year or two of the 5-team groups right at the start (well, the new start; we didn't enter the 60s incarnation), and I know Cork and Sligo (and Bohs actually) were in those groups.

Are Shels and Bohs the other two teams on seven Euro wins?

1) Iceland is right – We’ve knocked them out 5 times now. Malta, Sweden and Cyprus have 4 each
2) Not Iceland, and not a country we have a particularly good record against, although we’ve won last 2 ties
3) Rovers lost to Bayern in the 1966/67 season and Bayern went on to win the Cup Winners Cup
4) Not right yet.
5) European Cup = Rovers, Fairs Cup = Drumcondra, Champions League = Shels, still missing CWC, UEFA, intertoto and Europa League
6) Cork for CWC, Bohs for intertoto
7) Shels, Cork and Pats have all won 7 ties each. Rovers and Bohs on 6
8) Bohs have most individual wins and losses in Europe
9) We have Galway & Fingal
10) Not right yet but pineapple stu was closest

Is it 47 then for number 10? I was looking at this only yesterday (I'm basically a similar nerd to yourself, as you may have already guessed).

Other than that, the gaps are still numbers 2, 4 (two more ties to get) and 5 (first CWC, UEFA, TotoToto, Europa league). Just for convenience to see what's missing.

Dodge

Yeah, Scotland is right. We've scored 31 times against them (because we've played them the most times...)

Oh and Dinamo Tblisi is right. beat Waterford in the first round before going on to win the 1980/81 Cup winners Cup.

Only one missing from that now, and its in the 80s

I thought that too, but the question implies that the team scored in the game(s) they lost. And also, we drew 3-3 and 0-0 against Velbzahd Kyustendil in 2000 in the InterToto.

Thought Home Farm too, but checking it shows they drew 1-1 and lost 6-0, which is no good.

Pats and Shels both played in Britain on the same night in 1998 (Shels at home to Rongers in Birkinhead)

In 63/64 2 Irish clubs drew Spanish opposition bu the games in Spain were 5 days apart. That’s the closest AFAIK

10) How many ties have been won by Irish sides in Europe? 50 – including the three this year

As a matter of interest, how many of those 50 have been since the switch to summer soccer? Must be about 20?

Dodge
25/07/2011, 2:22 PM
28 since 2003

1999 was the last year without an irish side winning a tie

pineapple stu
25/07/2011, 2:27 PM
Have to be careful with that figure obviously - the change to summer football was also about the same time as the change to full-time pro and to more qualifying rounds meaning it'd be easier for clubs to get past rounds. In '99, we were drawn against teams from Sweden, Switzerland and Moldova, which would be a horrendous first-round draw these days.

bluemovie
25/07/2011, 2:30 PM
Wow. So 22 wins in 48 years (?) followed by 28 wins in 9 seasons. I know it's largely because of meeting weaker teams in qualifying rounds nowadays, but it's still a credit to the switch to summer football.

(Pineapple posted as I was typing)

Intertoto also went to home & away games in 98 and that gave us more opportunities. Between 2002 and 2008 (when it finished), of the 21 wins were in the Intertoto

2006 was the only year when all 4 teams won a tie

I'll throw in a few easy but interesting questions here....

Which 2 League of Ireland clubs (who have qualified for Europe) are unbeaten at home in Europe?
Which LoI club holds the record for the heaviest defeat in a single leg?
Which LoI club holds the record for the biggest away win in Europe by any club in that country? (i.e. one of our clubs holds the record for the biggest away win by any club in Poland or Iceland or ... )
Which LoI club recorded the longest unbeaten run at home in Europe?

And one I'm not sure of, off the top of my head... how many Republic of Ireland internationals have scored against League of Ireland clubs in Europe? I can think of two, there must be more.

pineapple stu
26/07/2011, 7:50 AM
First one is UCD and Home Farm anyway.

Heaviest defeat is probably Harps' 12-0 against Derby.

Longest unbeaten home run is possibly Pat's - (going back to 99, as Dodge posted recently. Bit mad as they were about the worst Irish club in Europe up until that point)

No ideas on the third one though. Would imagine it's a new relatively new country (as I'd be fairly sure there's been heavier Icelandic defeats than anything we've inflicted cos of the way the draws were done back in the day)

Dodge
26/07/2011, 8:42 AM
I'd guess the biggest away win was Derry away to Gretna

Pats and Dundalk bought had 8 game unbeaten streaks in Europe. Our last loss in Richmond was Zimbru so we’re 9 unbeaten there (lost to Steaua in the RDS) (and for the record we weren't the worst Irish team in Europe until then... ;) )

Great question on the Irish internationals. Can only think of one off hand

pineapple stu
26/07/2011, 8:56 AM
Good call on Gretna actually.

Irish internationals is a good question. I suppose rather than say "I know" but not tell, we may as well start the bidding with Liam Whelan's brace against Rovers in 58.

Dodge
26/07/2011, 9:03 AM
The only Irish international I knew about was Ronnie Whelan against Dundalk in early 80s

I think Frank Stapleton scored against Dundalk, playing for Ajax?
