Thats probably the difference, i reckon we have a better squad now by far and probably a better 11 too to be honest(whether or not club games show that), but trap just isn't as cautious as kerr, but i always got that from kerr was because he just never wanted to lose i.e. any other result would do which proved his downfall really.

If the home game against Switzerland had gone better he may have had a chance. I liked Kerr all along, but was devastated at how limply we went out. I hated his treatment by the press, even if he had become arrogant and aloof with them. The Irish hate it when one of their own jumps the pack and succeeds. They all like to see someone making his way up, but when he's up they love to shoot him down.

I remember it so clearly - I was still defending him come ten minutes to go in Lansdowne, still hoping he'd turn it around. Then he made the like-for-like swap of Doherty on for Morrison (if I remember right) when we crying out to go for broke, throw three up front. Infuriating. Couldn't defend him after that and we duly retreated to a weak fourth place.

Didn't he take Keane off?

Not in that instance but he did take Keane off earlier in the game for Stephen Elliott. (http://www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=1374&comp_id=68#teamTabs=results) Can't remember that happening, was it an injury? Anyway towards the death, three minutes to go and desperately need a goal. What do you do? Throw on Gary Doherty and stick with two up front. No Brian, no...

Yeah. Stehpen Elliott for Keane and Doherty for Morrison. Probably makes it worse.....
Just to cheer you all up here is the post match analysis from that game

the team under Trapattoni defends when they go ahead, but we're far more likely to score when we're behind than under Kerr. Kerr's team never came from behind to win.

Switzerland in Dublin.
I've an abiding memory of being stood on the North Terrace amongst a load of Swiss supporters, with a powerless feeling that the result we needed was ebbing away and we were sleep walking, lemming like, towards a depressing conclusion.
In all my years in attending Ireland games, I was never so disappointed in our lack of urgency and the sheer lethargy of it all.
As mentioned, Harte had a chance and I vaguely recall Stephen Reid having a go late on??????
Its not that we didn't push on to win it, indeed we should have conceded near the end as we were wide open at the back, but our attacks completely lacked conviction in what we were doing.
Trapp really has stamped his authority on the squad and his demands for the players to have standards, loyality and a unity of purpose have begun to reap dividends.
Kerr lost the dressingroom and I've always contended that certain players refused to give him any respect.

That was perfectly clear - sure they were giving out about stuff like being forced to watch DVD's of the opposition as part of him attempting to have them properly prepared.
I still don't think the comparison with Trapattoni is fair on Kerr - he wasn't replaced by Trapattoni, he was replaced by Staunton. That's the context that should be considered as to whether he should've been given another campaign or not.

Yeah - wasn't trying to suggest Trapp was the replacement, more an acknowldgement that we're in much better shape at the moment - thank God.

Agreed. Kerr's Switzerland in Dublin when contrasted against Trap's Paris demonstrates how things have come on in terms of how much more the players are willing to play for the jersey.

I'd do my head in if I ever have to hear that 'hopp suisse' again.
They can hop into the nearest pit.

Sorry, that comment was meant as a general comment on the thread rather than a reply to you specifically.

In fairness to them they are great fans. I had no expectations for Swiss fans and had a preconceived notion that they would be as dull as the stereotype, but they created some noise that day in 2003 in Basel when they beat us 2-0.

having to listen to them sing happy birthday to their manager that day was the pits!
never been so depressed in my life walking away from the stadium that night. weeks chasing tickets, 4,000 of us in the ground and about 10,000 of us outside and yet our efforts not matched by team or management that night
