Unbelievable result in Ferrycarrig tonight but not so much in the context of the game in which Derry didn't put out their best side and could never pick it up against the Youths who, once they got a sniff, battled with an intensity which Derry never matched. Wexford started 4-4-1-1 with Packie, Shane, Karl, Murt, Deano, Kevin, Patsy, Craig, Danny and Ben playing centrally behind Dara up front. Derru had an early chance after four when a looping shot went over Packie to hit the inside of the post and then nearly hit the other post but staying out. After ten, Packie had to get down smartly at the near post to collect a low cross from the Derry wingers (McClean and McLoughlin) who both looked threatening when they got the ball to feet. Game then surprisingly settled down with Derry posing little threat.

After 25, Danny got Youth's first shot away from thirty yards but it was saved comfortably by Doherty. A few minutes later, a very neat three-pass move put Danny clear on the left and he side-footed it easily past Doherty to put the Youths one ahead. Derry then replied with a good move but the low cross from the left wasn't met by any Derry forward to leave it one-nil. Youths then had a stroong final five as, firstly, Danny again got free on the left and his low shot was saved by Doherty's legs for a corner. Doherty then flapped badly at the resulting corner for another corner for Wexford. JUst as the two minutes of injury-time came up, Deano went on a mazy run across the eighteen-yard box and was taken down for a peno. Danny stuck it low left with Doherty going the wrong way for two-nil to the Youths. Although Derry looked strong wide, they kept over-hitting through balls to Packie who dealt with them comfortably for two-nil at half-time.

Derry brought on Zayed and McGlynn at the start of the second but Youths had two great chances early on when Ben got through on the right but pushed his shot against Doherty's legs and then, a monute later, Kevin had a free header from a corner but poked it wide when only six yards out and slightly stooping. After ten, Shane did well to clear the ball off the line with Packie beaten for Derry's first chance of the second-half. A few minutes later, Grinny came on for Kevin and Craig got a yellow for an innocuous enough tackle. After sixteen, a Derry forward poked the ball over the bar when through but stretching and you began to feel that it wasn't going to be Derry's night.

After twenty, a Derry forward volleyed over after Zayed clipped on a header. Ben then made it three-nil when his shot was deflected by a Derry defender attempting a block for three-nil. Derry then teed up another forward for a shot about eighteen out but again put it wide. Dara then picked up the ball wide right and running unopposed into the Derry box squared it for Danny to slide it home for four-nil to the Youths and with Wexford now dominating the pace of the game. Muzzi and Eoin Kinsella came on for Dara and Danny with injury time just beginning and another chance then fell to Derry but it was parried by Packie at point-blank range for Shane to hook clear. The ball was then returned into the Youths box for Zayed to tap home for a four-one final score to the Youths.

Derry could never get any urgency going and, except for McClean who was the pick of their team, were very disappointing on the night. Youths put in a huge effort with Dara and Danny outstanding up front, Craig and Patsy battling hard in midfield and Deano the pick of the defence. When Grinny came on, Youths also started to show a bit more composure on the ball and hopefully this great result will give a young side some confidence for the next few games. 4-1 at full-time with about 350 at the match including good Derry support.
