Late Wexford goal gave the Youths something to play for at the end but ultimately Longford came away with the three points which they deserved in lively enough game on the Strokestown Road tonight. Youths kept the 4-5-1 as against Cork and made one change from the last game with Packie, Shane, Murt, Karl, Deano, Muzzi, Patsy, Craig, Greg, Ban and Dara up front on his own. Wexford got the first shot away after about five when Ben had a left-footed effort which was comfortably saved but the lively Skelly and powerful Cowan took over the half thereafter with Skelly called offside when clean through and, after fifteen, Packie doing well to push away a Longford freekick which came over the wall. Two minutes later, Dara was also called offside when he latched onto a through ball and pushed it past the Longford keeper for a disallowed goal.

Wexford then fell away for the rest of the half as, firstly, Skelly scored from a stooping header from inside the six yard box from a freekick which was poor bit of defending from the Youths. Packie then pushed away another shot from Skelly and a few minutes later pushed a Cowan shot low left away for another corner. Skelly then should have scored when the ball dropped to him ten yards out from an uncleared corner but his half-volley went about a foot over the bar. Muzzi had a shot blocked right in injury time from a rare Wexford foray into the Longford half and the first half ended with Wexford happy enough to be going in only one down. Noel tried to shake things up by bringing Danny and Kevin Rowe on for Greg and Muzzi at the start of the second half.

Longford, however, then got their second with another piece of poor Wexford defending as Skelly, who was holding the ball while facing the corner-flag, was allowed beat two defenders along the end-line and a short pass in the box found Brady in the clear who tucked it away past Packie for 2-0. Game then opened up as Youths had to press and Danny made good ground on the right wing on a couple of occasions but nothing came of his efforts. However, with about 20 to go, Dara latched onto a through-ball and was taken down in the box for a penalty. Danny sent the keeper the wrong way with his low right-sided shot to bring the Youths back into the game at 2-1. Longford then had a few chances but got caught offside when a bit of composure would surely have worked. With a few minutes left, Grinny came on for Patsy and then, in injury time, Dara had the half-chance for the draw when put clear on the right by Danny. However, his first-time volley at full pace went over the bar for a final score of 2-1 to the home team at the end.

Best for Wexford were Dara who worked hard up front as the target-man and Danny playing wide right for the second forty-five. Packie handled well as usual in goal. Weaknesses for the Youths were again the set-piece which never really looked dangerous and the ploy of hitting Dara far too early on his own up front. In defence, Murt and Karl found Skelly and Cowan a bit of a handful whist Cathal Brady again impressed for Longford. 2-1 final score.

I think we just about deserved to win.. I dont think it was peno for ye as our defender did win the tackle but we were fortunate near the end when Paddy Collins dithered on the ball and I dont which of yer players it was but it was mentioned a dara? blazed it over the bar when it was easier to score..

whats happening to your ground at the moment can I ask? I heard the rumours...

Hi Martinho

Mick Wallace has confirmed that the Youths hold a lease on the ground from either Mick or his company which owns it so, hopefully, that will leave the Youths in possession.

Understand there is a mortgage on the ground so some bank (but not ACC) has an interest in it. A receiver could therefore be appointed but I don't think anyone would be that interested in purchasing it.

Good trip to Longford as usual.

Statement from Mick Wallace on ACC bank matters:
http://mickwallace.net/index.php/2011/0 ... -acc-bank/ (http://mickwallace.net/index.php/2011/05/statement-acc-bank/)

Below is a statement which I released to the press this evening. I regret that we owe money which is presently beyond the company’s ability to pay. We have not walked away, we have tried very hard to work our way through the financial crisis and are hopeful that the three remaining banks continue to work with us. I would like to thank the people from all over the country for the phenomenal support they have offered me this week.

To clarify issues relating to the appointment of a receiver by the ACC Bank to the assets held by that financial institution, I should make it clear that it does not affect the standing of the construction company, M&J Wallace Ltd., otherwise known as Wallace Construction. The company has dealings with four of the major banks and continues to work with the remaining three. Wallace Calcio which runs the wine bars and coffee shop, is a separate company and is not affected by the action of ACC Bank. Likewise, the Wexford Youths football club, based at Ferrycarrig in Wexford, is leased from the construction company and its survival is protected by that same lease.

As I have admitted more than three years ago, the construction company has suffered badly due to the financial crisis but it continues to do its utmost to work towards its survival. I have not given interviews to any newspapers in the last week, despite some choosing to quote me in error.

We deserved to win but took our foot off the gas way too easy , I was surprised with the strength of yere squad tho ye have some very handy players 2 of whom came off the bench, grincell and furlong, just wondering why they didnt start?

Martinho, Mick doesn't get to all the matches. He definitely missed the away match in Limerick and he also missed one in Ferrycarrig when he was in Italy with the U-16s.

Outspoken, Even though we have a small squad, I don't think Noel yet knows his best starting eleven. When playing 4-5-1, he seems to prefer Dara up front as he's bigger and possibly quicker than Danny. Grinny has been in and out. I would think Danny has done enough to start against Shelbourne on Monday (which I'll miss), even if it's on the wing.
