neo-grunge/electro
neo-grunge?? I've heard them called lots of things but...
I mean, they had their best material behind them before anyone used the word grunge.
Also looking forward to seeing them in oxygen though.
Conor, fair enough if you hate their music, but you've listed a few bands there that also play on an image.
In fact, most bands do.

And Robert Smith's way too old to keep flogging it. Lots of black and basketball boots may have passed in 1989, but not 2004.
Ditto. I do wish someone would tell Fat Bob that he's fat (oh yes he is, in an overfed-pussycat kind of way), in his late forties and happily married with several kids. Not a teenager on a the-world-doesn't-geddit or a no-one-understands-me style downer. And, what's worse, he's still churning out the same **** that the Cure were making in 1989. I liked it then, but now it sounds tired and dated.
Come in fatman, your time is well and truly up.

Have you listened to "Hot Hot Hot" from 1987 or "Disintegration" from 1989? If you like what the Cure are doing now then you should really enjoy those two albums. :)
FWIW, the title track from the latter is probably my all-time favourite Cure song. Dark and brooding. Nice.

Don't call it naivety. There's no crime in being young; you just get to approach everything with fresh eyes, and that's no bad thing. Just witness the rantings of some of the frazzled elders on here to see why. :)
Considering my music of choice is almost always either techno or hard(er) house, I've been pleasantly surprised by Idlewild and The Doves. I've also just heard Modest Mouse's new single, which IMHO is excellent.
Could guitars be making a comeback chez PP?

I liked A Forest and Catch, and the Disintegartion album had its moments, and that song 'However Much'. But Lovecats was vomit...
They knew how to pull a pop song out of the bag when they wanted to alright.
Must admit I like Love Cats though. Much better than that 'radio friendly' Friday I'm in love.
ps by However Much, do you mean Never Enough?
pps ccfcman. Moz is only controversial if you read British tabloids.
'We'll let you know' is a great song about football hooligans. They could play it over the PA this evening.

'Just like Heaven' and 'Catch' from Hot Hot Hot would be my favourite cure songs, think they're past it at this stage though, saw them on (i think it was ) Jonathon Ross recently and was left feeling, 'so what'

The Cure are brilliant. I wish they'd re-record Charlotte Sometimes.
I'm not a huge fan of popular music, but The Cure are one of the few groups who can infuse it with genuinely evocative atmosphere (even popular tracks like Close to Me; the version without the horrible f*cking brass in it, anyway.)

The Cure are one of the all time great English Bands and to try and capture them using love cats is a travesty.............Their real early stuff is great which includes classics like Grinding Halt, Fire in Cairo, Accuracy, Boys Don't cry, Killing an Arab and one of my top 3 cure songs (A Forest)...they went real dark with Faith & Pornography..(some real great tracks there too Primary and One Hundred Years to name 2) ..some heavy **** also there.......They really lightened up then with Japanese wispers which included the infamous love cats song... The Top was another great album which inlcudes Shake Dog Shake and The Caterpillar.....The Concert (a live album) with unreleases B-sides was released then...some real dark **** on teh b sides.....head on the door was next...a solid album....kiss me kiss me kiss me was next and it is a class album....2 favourites are just like heaven and hot hot hot...Disentigration was next and although quite dark at times has some really great songs on it...like Pictures of You and Lullaby......Mised up a remix album was next and I didnt like that at all.....close to me remix was good tho....Kinda lost interest after that so cant really comment much on albums after that because I dont own them....Did get teh Galore album...dont really have much time for the later stuff...........
they were a great bands live, just watch teh live video Orange...classic stuff....but they still should be able to put ona good show, even if robert is the only one left...the band members changed so often it was funny....

Bang on Northofthelee. The Cure are easily one of the best English bands of the eighties and Just Like Heaven is one of my favourite songs of all time.
I'd nearly consider going to Oxegen just to see The Cure but the 40,000 puking teenagers would put me off. Conor - go out and buy the Cure's Greatest Hits, I guarantee even you'll like it.

Checked the listing.
It has Boys Don't Cry, Inbetween Days, Lovecats, Friday I'm in Love and a host of songs I hate.
I just remembered the really good song they had, which was 'Play for Today'...which is not on the greatest hits album.
Wasn't really one for the Smiths either. Thought Marr made them, and he preferred Electronica anyway...now they were a good band...
The Concert , the Cure Live .....Listen to that Conor....great Album....I had the cassette version and it had the B-sides but when I got it on CD the b-side were missing :(
Dury's 'Spasticus Autisticus'...
After that song was banned by the BBC, they played it at every gig, right up to the very end.
Speaking of Killing an Arab, how about a compilation of songs 'banned' during the Gulf war (pt1)
Something Happens - Parachute
Bangles - Walk like an Egyptian
Desmond Dekker - Israelites
Phil Collins - In the air tonight
Anything by Bomb the Bass
Anything by Massive attack
Carter USM - Bloodsports for all
Doors - Light My Fire
A-ha - Hunting high and low

What the hell is wrong with Inbetween Days? It has the immortal lyric "Well I know I was wrong when I said it was true that it couldn't be me or be her in between without you" all sung in one breath.
Agree with you about The Smiths - most over-rated band in history. When it comes to Manchester and the 80s nobody comes near the mighty New Order.

They were extremely good, but Manchester produced better in the 80s IMHO, particularly The Stone Roses and 808 State.
Much later 80's circa 89 ish...............agreed tho........stone roses were great......the manchester sound at that time was great with happy mondays, teh charlatans, inspiral carpets etc....

Microdisney,Stump,5 go down to the sea,....typical I can't think of anymore!
Two of the Carpets are from Oldham afaik, including Clint Boon hence the Oldham Band thing. Rest are Mancs.
The Charlatans - Burgess was born in Manch, grew up in Northwich (Manc overspill). Rob Collins is from Manchester. The rest are from North Midlands, previously in various mod bands.
Brown and Squire were from Timperley, which is close enough to Altrincham, so that's where that might have come from.
Surprised at you Conor, for a big dance head, slagging off something that Mike Pickering was involved with. (Still shíte though).

Macy - Who's Timperley's most famous son? Frank Sidebottom. Now there's a real star, none of your Stone Roses nonsense. ;)
As for Mick Hucknall, you're right he a total cnut but he has one redeeming feature. Him and his manager set up Blood & Fire Records which is one of the best Reggae reissue labels there is. Without Blood & Fire there'd be loads of great stuff which would have been lost forever. Still a cnut though.

He was banned from Alty, as he was bad luck (must have kept going, minus head considering where they're languishing around now). Only a glory hunter anyway, ditching Timperley Big Shorts every time Alty had a cup run. Used to go a few Altrincham games (and also a few Bury games), some great games in the early rounds of the Cup - Clive Freeman against Chester* (when they were still a league team) won Goal of the Month. Sad to see their demise when the likes of Macc went on to the league (Alty were always the better club!).
Conference football would want to have improved since I last saw it, if people are claiming the eL premier is below that standard.
*btw The Deva Stadium in Chester would be a good model for eL teams IMO. Nice compact, simple 6,000 capacity. Standing at the two ends, seats down the two sides.

Puppet was called little Frank and he had a girlfriend called Denise. As part of the act big Frank disliked little Frank, which even for an stage show could be seen as a little worrying.
