I remember, back in the late nineties, Townsend was interviewed on ITV about the prospects of English teams in the latter stages of European competition and said that he facied "both our teams" to go through (neither did, btw.) Strange that this comment didn't attract the kind of opprobrium heaped on Matt Holland for singing God Save the Queen, particularly given that Townsend was probably an active Irish international at the time. But then again, most Irish "football fans" wouldn't have seen anything wrong with his statement...
